Thermaltake Introduces the First Gaming Mouse with a Cooling Fan

Thermaltake has added a funky new feature to its Black Element gaming mouse, and if we were within two weeks of April Fools’ Day, I’d label it a prank. It’s a removable 6,000 RPM cooling fan that mounts on the front end. This one’s for you, sweaty palms.

Our friends at IGN direct us to the Thermaltake eSports page and an image that speaks volumes:


Officially, it’s the Black Element Cyclone Edition, it’s a 6500 DPI laser mouse, and it’s the first gaming mouse to feature a cooling fan. It’s slated to breeze in sometime in August for $80, and I can’t decide if it’s ridiculous or ridiculously awesome.

Send Us Your Easter Messages Via Letter Box

On April Fools’ Day we asked you to send us your spoof games via Letter Box in exchange for eShop vouchers and the entries that we received were pretty cool! You can check them out here.

Letter Box is free software that allows you to send and receive messages via StreetPass and SpotPass. You can write a greeting or make a drawing, in 2D or 3D, and the recipient will see the message animate as if it is being re-created before their eyes. You can also share photos and sound effects and use Play Coins to unlock new stationery designs.

And just so you’re completely certain that yes, it is actually a joke and Valve hasn’t made one of the biggest and most long-awaited announcements on the day dedicated to pranks, clicking on the announcement brings up this little gem.

Minecraft creator announces “Mars Effect”

Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson took the mickey out of everyone today with the launch of this website. According to the site, Mojang’s latest title “is still very early in development” but will feature delightful things such as “hard science fiction,” “lots of engineering,” “space battles against the AI or other players,” and, this is the best part, “a game ending that makes sense.”

Assassin’s Creed for Kinect…now with hay bale hiding!

Just to be clear: it wasn’t Ubisoft that made this, but rather a very savvy YouTube user who created a trailer for what Assassin’s Creed might look like if it were to fully take advantage of Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing system. Note the very impressive “hiding in a hay bale” position, and our personal favourite: running around in circles.

Rock Band: The Board Game

Harmonix decided April 1 would be a good day to announce its new project: a board game edition of the popular Rock Band franchise. It might just be crazy enough to work. Go on, download the board and play at home, we dare you.

Google: 8-Bit Google Maps

Google has implemented a working Dragon Quest-style version of Google Maps along with a promotional video showing it at work as an actual cartridge designed for Famicom (and specifically Famicom, since the voice command functionality is shown working with the system’s Controller II microphone.

Mojang: Mars Effect

Mojang announced a new game called Mars effect. A not-so-subtle nod to their recent altercation with Bethesda over the use of the word scrolls. The website states that they pondered many other game names like “Steve online” and “Wind Commander”. In the features of the game, one of the bullet points says “A game ending that makes sense” which is an obvious nod to the recent Mass effect 3 ending uproar.

Saints Row The Third: Enter The Dominatrix

An announcement from THQ on the Saints row website told of a standalone expansion pack in which the player is kidnapped by an evil alien warlord called Zinyak and entered into the Dominatrix, a simulation program which is modeled after Steelport.

Resistance 3′s April Fools’ Gag and Other Hilarity

April Fools’ Day is a predictable day, one where you can’t trust anyone. But trust this readers: Resistance 3 is chock-full of Easter Eggs, including one that can only be seen on April Fools’ Day (or if you’re wily enough to set your PlayStation 3′s internal calendar to April 1st… either/or).

What are some of these tantalizing secrets? Well, none of these unlock secret sections of the game or anything, but they will make you chuckle. So let’s take a look at them, shall we?

Oh, and there’s one serious Easter Egg, too… but we’ll save that one for last.

In Resistance 3, the “Feral” variety of Chimera are no joke. Then again, they have their own cannon fodder, and they’re called Grims. You’ll encounter Grims a plethora of times throughout the campaign, but when you fight them in Haven, Oklahoma — specifically during the Boat Ride level — you might find them doing very mysterious things on April Fools’ Day.

Specifically, you’ll find them throwing garden gnomes at you. That’s right. Garden gnomes. Check out the video below to see for yourself.

During the same boat ride that the Grims assail you with all matter of lawn decorations, you can find a rather eerie figure if you know precisely where to look.

This grayed-out character overlooks the flooded town from a broken window as Malakov drives the boat, leaving Capelli free to do as he wishes. Take out your Marksman, as shown in the video below, and aim it at the window shown as you pass by. You’ll see the shadowy figure in question… and perhaps get a chill up your spine in the process.

The Chimera really love their garden gnomes… but do the miners of Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania share the same affinity as their mortal enemies? It appears so.

Head to the Coal Shafts level in the western part of the state, and you’ll eventually come across the room with the staircase shown in the video below. With your Auger equipped, take aim at the crate underneath the stairs and you’ll spot a plethora of well-hidden garden gnomes. Just what they’re doing there, of course, remains to be seen.

Are you starting to sense a trend here? Insomniac Games loves them some garden gnomes, and more of them are hidden even deeper in Coal Shafts of Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania.

This time, you’re going to want to wield your Auger and examine the locker in the flooded part of the mine, as seen in the video below. More garden gnomes are carefully stored there, away from the feral Chimera that occupy the space. Oh, and if you want to see even more garden gnomes in the mines, set your PlayStation 3 to April 1st and see if you can’t get Satan to shoot some at you…

Who says the Chimera can’t enjoy the beauty of winter? When you’re in New York late in the game, you’ll find evidence of their appreciation in the form of a snowman.

In New York City, head to the Central Park level. You’ll spawn right near a crashed VTOL in a frozen lake to your left. Ignore the Chimera ahead and jump on top of the VTOL using the downed wing, as illustrated in the video below. Then, break out your sniper rifle: Marksman works here, but Deadeye will give you a better view of what you’re looking for. In another crashed VTOL to your left, you’ll see a snowman. Feel free to destroy it, if you’ve got an evil sort of heart.

In the same exact place the snowman can be seen in New York City, you can see a little ode to creatures that never actually make an appearance in Resistance 3… except right here.

The screenshot doesn’t really do it much justice, but the video below does. Furies were aquatic Chimera in Resistance 2, and here they are in Resistance 3. Boom!

We promised you a serious Resistance 3 Easter Egg, and here it is. During the game, you’ll find wine bottles strewn around various environments. If you take a close look at the labels of those wine bottles, you’ll see something interesting.

We reached out to Insomniac Games about this in particular. Creative Director Marcus Smith gave us the image above, a high-res version of the wine bottle label. It memorializes Dan Johnson, an Insomniac employee that sadly passed away several years ago. “Dan meant a lot to all of us, so if you’re going to show off the bottle, please show it in its proper glory,” Smith said in an e-mail.

Consider it done. Mr. Smith. Consider it done.

Dragons Announced as New Faction in World of Warplanes

It has begun. Well, either that or developer Wargaming.net has flipped its lid — which we’re not completely ruling out because CEO Victor Kislyi is nutty. Take a look at your calendar and you’ll notice April Fools’ Day is right around the corner. Then consider this announcement from Wargaming.net: dragons are the new faction being added to World of Warplanes. Yes, dragons, the fictional, fire-breathing winged beasts. There’s even a dragons versus airplanes trailer to “prove” it.

“Adding dragons into World of Warplanes has been one of the most challenging aspects of game development so far,” Kislyi said in a statement. “Dragons are so different from planes; they are much more edgy and self-willed, but if you put in just a little more effort, they will serve you well. I’m happy we’ve finally announced them!”
