Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag details emerge

After a poster for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag leaked yesterday, more rumored information about the game has emerged.

The Examiner reports that the main character in Black Flag is Edward Kenway, the father of Haytham Kenway from last year’s Assassin’s Creed III. Edward is described as a privateer, assassin, and “occasional” pirate.

The report further claims that Black Flag will be set in the Caribbean. Players will reportedly get to travel to multiple islands, including Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas.

The Examiner also suggests Black Flag is presently running current-generation technology, though Ubisoft has plans to release the game on future platforms.

Darby McDevitt, whose previous credits include a host of Assassin’s Creed titles, is said to be Black Flag’s lead scriptwriter. His LinkedIn profile states he is currently working on “unannounced stuff.”

Writing on Twitter yesterday, McDevitt said, “Is it that time again? [Assassin's Creed] fans getting all apoplectic ‘n’ stuff. Squirming and squealing. Love it.”

Earlier this month, Ubisoft confirmed it was developing a new Assassin’s Creed game for release during its fiscal 2014 (April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014). According to CEO Yves Guillemot, this game will take place in a new setting and star an all-new hero.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag revealed

The next Assassin’s Creed game may be a swashbuckling adventure with pirates. A tipster has sent Kotaku marketing material for a game called Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

The poster shows a series-familiar hooded assassin wielding a pistol in one hand and a sword in the other. This character is standing on a ship–with a black flag in the background–and is surrounded by a host of pirates.

If Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is indeed real and takes place–at least in part–on the high seas, it will not be a first for the series. Last year’s Assassin’s Creed III featured various naval missions where players battled enemy ships.

UK Chart: Crysis 3 lands top, Aliens: Colonial Marines sales drop 84%

EA’s Crysis 3 has taken pole position in the UK charts, firing an arrow into the chart dreams of the disappointing Aliens: Colonial Marines. Gearbox’s FPS saw an 84% drop in sales and finishes in fifth place.

Konami’s Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance lands in the second spot, with 5500 sales separating first and second place.

It’s the first week this year where there’s been a new No 1 and No 2 in the charts. However, neither managed to shift as many copies in its opening weekend as Dead Space 3 or Aliens: Colonial Marines, which still holds the record for biggest-selling opening week of 2013.

Elsewhere, the ever-reliable FIFA 13 hangs around in third, followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops II in fourth. Dead Space 3 is sixth, Far Cry 3 is seventh, Need for Speed: Most Wanted eighth, Assassin’s Creed III ninth and Hitman: Absolution tenth.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation sales nearing 600,000

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation has sold “close to 600,000″ units, Ubisoft revealed today as part of a post-earnings financial call.

It is not clear if that figure represents sold-in (shipped) or sold-through (actually sold), as Ubisoft used the same terminology in reference to Assassin’s Creed III, which has shipped (not sold) 12 million copies.

It is also not clear if Liberation’s sales volume also includes units from the game’s PlayStation Vita bundle. A Ubisoft representative was not immediately available to comment.

Assassin’s Creed III ships 12M, Far Cry 3 at 4.5M

As part of its latest earnings report today, Ubisoft announced new shipment figures for the latest entries in its tentpole franchises. Assassin’s Creed III has now shipped 12 million units; Far Cry 3 sits at 4.5 million, while Just Dance 4 has reached 8 million units shipped.

For the three-month period ended December 31, Ubisoft revenue rose 23 percent to €802 million ($1.07 billion). The French publisher called out its Online business as a major contributor to its bottom line, rising 143 percent to €55.2 million ($74.1 million). This was led by digital distribution sales and revenue derived from downloadable content.

Ubisoft’s Casual segment saw diminished revenue during the quarter, but this was largely offset by the strength of the company’s core and Online segments highlighted above. In addition, Ubisoft said back catalog sales continued to rise, due in part to “sharp growth” in online and digital back catalog sales, which offset dipping retail back catalog sales.

According to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, the publisher’s market share has exceeded 11 percent for the first time ever in the United States and Europe.

Looking ahead to 2013 and 2014, Guillemot said it expects further growth in sales and operating income due in part to focusing on core gamers, free-to-play games, and digital distribution.

New Assassin’s Creed on the way

During a post-earnings financial call today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot announced that the next installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise will launch in the company’s fiscal 2014 (April 1, 2013-March 31, 2014). The game will feature a new hero and will be set in a new time period.

No platforms for the new Assassin’s Creed game were announced, though future consoles from Microsoft and Sony are rumored to launch later this year.

Previous reports suggested the next Assassin’s Creed game could be set in Brazil and possibly feature co-op.

Assassin’s Creed III is the latest entry in the series and has shipped more than 12 million units to date. That game is set in Colonial America and stars Connor Kenway, or Ratonhnhaké:ton.

In addition, Ubisoft addressed the future of the Far Cry brand, saying “fans certainly won’t have to wait four more years for the next Far Cry,” according to Joystiq. A Far Cry 3 follow-up comes as little surprise, as the game has shipped 4.5 million units to date.

Assassin’s Creed cut its ‘ambitious’ co-op mode for Desmond

The original Altair-led Assassin’s Creed once featured a “huge” co-op component that was later cut to make way for Desmond’s Animus-dipping storyline set in the present day, Ubisoft has revealed.

Speaking to OXM, Assassin’s Creed III mission director Philippe Bergeron revealed that the series’ 2007 debut entry featured an “ambitious” co-op mode set across the Third Crusade timeframe.

“Before we knew about the Desmond story and Animus link, we had a huge co-op component in there,” said Bergeron, “but it just became too hard to do: the engine couldn’t support it, and then the metaphor we had above it didn’t support it.”

“Co-op was one of those big things at the beginning that just didn’t make sense in the end,” added Bergeron. Assassin’s Creed would later inherit a form of multiplayer in 2010 as part of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, the third game in the series.

Each subsequent game has also featured a multiplayer mode, but no game in the series has yet attempted to integrate co-op into the single-player campaigns.

“For us it was really part of the single player experience,” said Bergeron, “to have in-and-out co-op, and in the end we never thought it made sense in the storyline that we had for the Animus.”

“There was no way to reconcile having multiplayer or co-op in an ancestor’s memories. Your ancestor lived his life in a certain way, so assuming you had branching storylines, it creates a paradox. It didn’t fit.”

The latest three-part chunk of Assassin’s Creed III DLC, the single-player Tyranny of King Washington campaign that’s separate from the main game, will kick off on February 19.

UK Chart: DmC knocked to fourth as Black Ops II takes lead

Call of Duty: Black Ops II has taken first place in the UK charts this week, with Capcom and Ninja Theory’s DmC: Devil May Cry slipping to fourth after being unable to keep the top spot for two weeks running.

It’s the first time Black Ops II has topped the chart in 2013. FIFA 13 — which took the charts for the first two weeks of January — is in second, and Ubisoft’s island romp Far Cry 3 is third.

The usual suspects fill out the top ten: Assassin’s Creed III, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Just Dance 4, Football Manager 2013, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Hitman: Absolution.

The only new release last week was The Sims 3: ’70s, ’80s, ’90s Stuff, which entered the charts in 36th. This Friday sees much-loved Studio Ghibli JRPG Ni No Kuni landing on shop shelves, but will it be able to make the charts next week?
