EA registers Battlefield 13-20 domains

Electronic Arts has registered domain names for Battlefield 13-20. Spotted by Fusible (via Joystiq), EA on May 2 picked up each of the names through a brand protection company called Corporations Service Company (CSC).

None of the websites are functional.

EA now owns dot-com domain names for Battlefield 2-9 and Battlefield 13-20. Battlefield 10-12 are owned by companies unaffiliated with EA.

By comparison, Fusible points out domains for ModernWarfare 8-20 are currently not registered to Activision or anyone for that matter.

Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but not Wii U. It is the fourth core installment in the shooter series, following 2011′s Battlefield 3.

DDoS attacks disrupting Battlefield 3 servers

Current outages affecting EA’s Battlefield 3 and its social tracking service Battlelog are being caused by Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, EA has said.

The official Battlefield Twitter account says “the current BF3 and Battelog outages are a result of activity that appears to be aimed at overwhelming our game servers.”

There is no current ETA on when the issues will be resolved. “Thank you for being understanding,” continued the Battlefield account. “We are going to try our best to get everyone back onto the battlefield as soon as possible.”

In response to the current outages, DICE and EA have postponed the Battlefield 3 Double XP event, scheduled to run from May 9 through May 13, to a later date.

DICE is currently working on Battlefield 4, which is due to be released later this year. EA last night said it would also debut a new game from Battlefield developer DICE at E3 2013.

Battlefield 4 retailer image shows October 31 release

A promotional poster spotted on Australian retailer EB Games has marked October 31, 2013 as the release date for upcoming shooter Battlefield 4.

Thursday is traditionally the day games are released in Australia, which could suggest a Tuesday October 29 release date for North America and the UK.

The EB Games poster was snapped by BF4Central, and is the latest retailer leak that states the series’ Commander Mode will be returning in Battlefield 4. “Rank up into the seat of the brand new Commander Mode and lead your team to victory,” says the poster.

Battlelog 2.0, the next version of Battlefield’s social tracking tool, is also mentioned. “Track every shot, every opponent, every detail of your online Battlefield career,” it says.

Customers are also told to “Go Premium”, with another mention of the previously rumoured Drone Strike DLC.

Earlier promotional material suggested the game will feature three playable factions: the US, China, and Russia.

Battlefield 4 was officially unveiled by EA during GDC 2013. So far EA has only confirmed the game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Battlefield 4 dev ignoring motion control ‘gimmick’

The gaming industry’s current state of motion controls is a “gimmick” and won’t be featured in Battlefield 4, according to the DICE executive producer Patrick Bach.

Speaking to Edge, Bach added that companies have been “throwing money” at the studio in an effort to get them to code support for “quirky” control schemes, but added that DICE is not interested.

“We are not interested in things that don’t make the game better,” said Bach. “There are a lot of gimmicks–people throwing money at us–‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing’. No, it doesn’t make the game better.”

“We are extremely open to innovation, but if it’s a gimmick, there’s no point unless it adds value to the player. Touch screens used to be a gimmick, because no one could get it to work until iPhone came out and used it right. It adds to the experience, and now everyone is doing it. To us it’s the same with motion control and perceptual gaming in general; if it adds, great. If it’s a gimmick, ignore it.”

Battlefield 4 to see return of Commander Mode

Promotional material used by US retailer GameStop suggests Battlefield 4 will see a return of the series’ Commander Mode.

The information is from a laminated sheet–which looks like it was produced by GameStop rather than EA–displayed in-store to promote pre-orders, which also states that the multiplayer mode will feature three different factions: Russia, China, and the United States.

YouTube user “luger700″ reports that the currently unverified footage was captured from two GameStop stores. A clerk is reported to have said the information came “direct from EA.”

Commander Mode was last seen in 2006′s Battlefield 2142, and offered one member of each team the chance to direct other players using a top-down view. The mode did not feature in 2010′s Battlefield 3.

Battlefield 4 is due for release later this year. So far only Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions have been confirmed.
