Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time hitting PS Vita

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will not be a PlayStation 3 exclusive after all. Developer Sanzaru Games today announced on the PlayStation Blog that a version of the upcoming platformer is also in development for Sony’s PlayStation Vita. The game will launch this fall on the same day as the already announced PS3 version.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be a multiplatform affair.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be a multiplatform affair.

According to Sanzaru Games president Glen Egan, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for the PS Vita will contain system-specific features that make use of the front and rear touch screens, as well as the device’s motion controls. Additionally, the game boasts cross-save support, allowing players to save their progress on either the PS3 or PS Vita version and pick it up on either device right where they left off.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time picks up after the events of the 2005 PlayStation 2 game Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. In the title, Sly travels through time, meeting up with his ancestors across a “wild adventure.” It is the first new Sly Cooper title Sanzaru Games has developed, but the studio is familiar with the franchise, having contributed to the Sly Collection.

Dead Island 2 not in development

Earlier this week, a source told IGN Germany that Yager Development, which is presently finishing up Spec Ops: The Line for its June release, had been tapped to develop Dead Island 2. This is not the case, says Guido Eickmeyer, development director with the original game’s publisher Deep Silver.

Dead Island 2 is not in development, at least not yet.

Dead Island 2 is not in development, at least not yet.

“We are neither working with Yager on Dead Island 2 nor do we have any contractual agreement with Yager about any project at this point,” he said.

The developer did not rule out working with Yager in the future, saying there is a “legitimate chance” the companies will one day team up. He even went as far to say a future relationship could be on a project related to the Dead Island franchise.

Eickmeyer went on to explain that Deep Silver does not have Dead Island 2 “in concept or production with external partners,” and that it is currently considering options for a sequel.

Dead Island was developed by Polish shop Techland and shipped in September 2011 to generally positive review scores. The game shipped 3 million copies and welcomed various add-on packs. Speculation about a follow-up sparked in November, when Techland filed a trademark application for Dead World.

Though a sequel to Dead Island is currently out of sight, a movie based on the property may see the light of day. Film studio Lionsgate optioned the rights from Deep Silver after the game shipped last year. Development of the Dead Island film will be led by The Mummy producer Sean Daniel and Stefan Sonnenfeld, who did post-production work on various Pirates of the Caribbean films and X-Men: The Last Stand.

Nascar the Game: Inside Line racing this fall

Activision and developer Eutechnyx are returning to the racetrack this fall. This morning, Activision announced Nascar the Game: Inside Line, a new licensed racing title due out later this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii.

Eutechnyx is circling the oval again with Nascar the Game: Inside Line.

Eutechnyx is circling the oval again with Nascar the Game: Inside Line.

In development at United Kingdom-based studio Eutechnyx, the title will feature various Nascar Sprint Cup Series drivers, teams, and cars, as well as 23 licensed racetracks. Additionally, Nascar the Game: Inside Line adds a career mode and new online features, which include “realistic race weekends.”

Nascar the Game: Inside Line is a sequel to Nascar 2011: The Game, which shipped to a tepid reception for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii in March 2011. That title was the first to come of Eutechnyx’s hold on the Nascar license.

Epic Games pushing for ‘quantum leap’ in next-gen hardware power

Actually,I hope Next Gen consoles won’t be too much of a big leap in power,I don’t think it’s good for them to emulate PCs by using expensive and powerful hardware, instead, they should focus on newer ways and ideas to play games, let the PC have the power,as always…

Also, big jump in hardware difference would also largely increase development costs, that are even today very expensive.I wish Next Gen consoles to be more powerful than current Gen,but not by too much, and I also hope they won’t be too expensive for the consumer. If that happens, who knows,we may actually see the rise in middle tier developers, which are mostly gone now sadly, all because of high development costs. You are either a big name publisher,or indie dev nowdays, and that isn’t right,no middle ground. We need to have one gen with less huge leaps,to stabilize the development costs, and make things more competitive in the industry again.Aged console hardware is only a part of the industry’s stagnation problem, what we need most to move things forward is INNOVATION,and we won’t get that if we only have developers who constantly play it safe…

If console hardware advances by too much now, only developers that will keep up with it will be big names like EA,Activision,Ubisoft, and you know where that leads stale games and genres, filled with all sorts of anti-consumer crap…

It’s easy for Epic to speak of “quantum leaps”,they’re very well funded by MS,but “quantum leaps” could mean a quick death to many smaller developers who don’t have industry giants funding them…

Lionhead hiring for next-gen MMO-like title

With Fable Heroes out the door and development on Fable: The Journey coming to a close, what will developer Lionhead Studios build next? According to a job listing at the United Kingdom developer, the studio is staffing up to create an all-new next-generation title with massively multiplayer online genre qualities.

Is Microsoft making a console MMO?

Is Microsoft making a console MMO?

The job ad (which has since been removed) was spotted by indefatigable Internet sleuth Superannuation and reported on by MCV. According to the description, the title will be a role-playing game designed with a “radical take on how cooperative and multiplayer gameplay feeds into the experience.” Additionally, the title will blend single-player and multiplayer into one experience, claims the ad.

On top of that, the new game will boast a “complex progression system, multiple routes through the campaign, and an MMO-like multiplayer experience that will affect the outcome of the player experience, and many other attributes surrounding their profile (such as the environment and outcome of certain actions).” Further specifics were not offered.

While the job ad in question is no longer available, a Lionhead Studios
requisition for an experienced server programmer seeks a person with knowledge of MMO titles.

Lionhead Studios is familiar with role-playing games, having created the Fable franchise, but the company has never built an MMO. As of press time, Microsoft had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

If Lionhead Studios is in fact working on an MMO, the company will do so without Peter Molyneux. He left Microsoft in March, and is currently heading up 22 Cans, a new independent developer.

Step Inside the Sound Booth for Batman: Arkham City

Celery makes for an awesome sound effects tool. The audio proof is delivered by the Dark Knight when he breaks criminals’ bones in Batman: Arkham City. Yup, they did that with celery. In honor of Batman’s upcoming GOTY edition, Rocksteady is providing a behind-the-scenes look at Arkham City’s development, and today we learn how the studio made the punches, capes, and snapped limbs sound so good.

Batman: Arkham City GOTY, featuring the new DLC adventure, Harley Quinn’s Revenge, is set to ship for consoles in September. We’re still waiting on Rocksteady and Warners for the PC release date.

Devil’s Third in purgatory at THQ

Yulaw2000 well technically speaking I was looking forward to it, I wanted to see what it was all about first, but I can understand THQ stand, they spent quit alot on it, it been in development for a long time, Itagaki wasn’t showing the game or any sort of progress at all (to us at least), players really lost interest, only those who know Itagaki may still remember it, not to mention a new engine, the trouble THQ is going through and the whole next year coming out in 2014/2015, it seems they got their hand full, Itagaki needs to show his game if he ever want it published, he need to show that it is amazing, maybe there is hope like how Activision cancelled True Crime Hong Kong but Square Enix got it and is publishing it as Sleeping Dogs, THQ is a good company they are still trying to support Itagaki and his game, I hope they come around and publish it themselves, at least show it at E3 see the reception and then decide if it worth it or not.

World in Conflict dev hiring for next-gen

World in Conflict developer Ubisoft Massive can now be added to the list of studios working on next-generation projects. A requisition for an online game programmer at the Malmo, Sweden-based shop seeks a staffer to work on a next-gen title.

Might Ubisoft Massive be bringing World in Conflict to next-gen systems?

Might Ubisoft Massive be bringing World in Conflict to next-gen systems?

The project is described as a “modern AAA online game,” but no further details on the title are available. As of press time, Ubisoft had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

Ubisoft Massive is presently assisting Ubisoft Montreal on development of Far Cry 3. The studio previously contributed to Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and also created the Ground Control series in addition to World in Conflict.

Ubisoft Massive joins a long list of studios working on next-generation projects, including NetherRealm Studios, Naughty Dog, Remedy Entertainment, Bethesda, and Ready at Dawn. Publisher Electronic Arts is gearing up for the next wave of consoles, too, last week revealing it will invest $80 million in future-generation development in 2012.

Crystal Dynamics Delays Tomb Raider Reboot

Young Lara Croft needs more time to grow if she’s to be properly prepared for her Tomb Raider reboot. And no, I’m not making a joke about her cup size. Crystal Dynamics has bumped the new Tomb Raider from fall 2012 to early 2013 in an effort to deliver “the best game of our careers.”

In a post on the official Tomb Raider forums, Crystal Dynamics boss Darrell Gallagher broke the news, stating that the studio believes it has something “truly special” on its hands, something that deserves more time baking in the development oven.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve,” Gallagher said. “We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.”

So, along with BioShock Infinite, another of my most anticipated games of 2012 has officially become one of my most anticipated games of 2013. Good news, though: Crystal Dynamics says it will show off Tomb Raider at E3 in June, so we’ll all get to see how it’s shaping up.

Tomb Raider delayed to 2013

The upcoming Tomb Raider title currently in development at Crystal Dynamics has been delayed from Q3 2012 to Q1 2013.

The announcement came today via a post on the official Eidos Games forums, in which Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher outlined the developer’s reasons for delaying the title:

Lara is going to have to hang out just a little bit longer.

Lara is going to have to hang out just a little bit longer.

“Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest-quality game,” Gallagher said in the message. “In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from fall 2012 [spring in Australia] to the first quarter of 2013.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game, and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice, and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.”

As a consolation prize, the studio also released a screenshot in preparation for more information about the game, which will be revealed during this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June.

Last year, it was revealed that Crystal Dynamics would be exploring Lara Croft’s beginnings in the upcoming Tomb Raider title. Earlier this year, the studio also announced that it had no plans to release the game on the Wii U.

Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Tomb Raider is the first instalment in the series since 2010′s downloadable multiplayer-focused Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and the first standalone game since 2008′s Tomb Raider: Underworld.
