Preowned Wii U consoles allow free game downloads, user claims

Gamers who purchase a second-hand Wii U can re-download all digital content the past owner previously purchased free of charge. That’s according to a NeoGAF user, who claims games are tied to the console itself and not any one individual Nintendo Network ID account.

The user–DSN2K–claimed the second-hand system was “wiped,” though it was not mentioned where the console was purchased.

The user noted that upon entering the Wii U eShop, some games did not have a price, but were instead labelled “redownload,” despite never having paid for them.

Thus far, the user has been able to download Trine 2 and Nano Assault Neo for free.

A Nintendo representative was not immediately available to comment.

The Old Republic’s Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion revealed

The first expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic will arrive during spring 2013, Electronic Arts announced today. The Rise of the Hutt Cartel add-on increases the massively multiplayer online role-playing game’s level cap to 55, adds a new planet called Makeb, and features fully-voiced conversations.

Additional information regarding the expansion will be shared in the coming months, EA said.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion will be available by digital download for $20 (subscribers can grab the content for $10). Those who preorder by January 7 will receive five days of early access to the content.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel will not be sold as a boxed product in stores.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launched a year ago this month behind generally favorable reviews, selling 2 million copies in its first three months. Subscriber figures fell and the game added a free-to-play option last month.

Resident Evil 6 hits PC March 22

The PC version of Resident Evil 6 will arrive March 22, 2013, Capcom announced today. The game will launch with “all console content,” as well as future content delivered through free title updates. In September, Capcom said Resident Evil 6 for PC would not ship for “some time” and promised it would not make the same mistakes as Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 6 for PC will be available as a download on March 22, with no mention made of a release at traditional retail outlets. The Steam version of the game will support cloud saving, Steam Achievements, leaderboards, and game overlay.

Capcom also announced today that Resident Evil 6 will be available via Xbox 360 Games on Demand sometime later this year. No price for this version of the game was announced.

In addition, the previously announced Resident Evil 6 title update for consoles is out today. This update unlocks Ada Wong’s campaign from the beginning and adds a co-op partner for her campaign. Additionally, the update brings new camera-adjustment options and a No Hope difficulty.

Capcom also said a new title update for Resident Evil 6 will be available January 22. It will make the Agent Hunt mode available from the start, allows for stage selection within chapters, and brings a new quick time event assist. For the full update notes, check out Capcom’s website.

Lastly, three new multiplayer modes (Predator, Onslaught, and Survivor) will be available for the Xbox 360 version of Resident Evil 6 tomorrow for $4 each or bundled together for $9. It is not clear when these modes will arrive for the PS3 or PC versions of the game.

Halo 4 DLC out now

Halo 4‘s first wave of downloadable content is out now. The Crimson Map Pack for Microsoft’s new sci-fi shooter adds three new maps and eight achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore. It is available as a free download for those who have a $25 War Games Map Pass or $10 otherwise.

As was previously announced, the maps included with the Crimson Map Pack are Wreckage, Harvest, and Shatter. The maps will be playable in their own playlist that only features the new environments.

The Crimson Map Pack also brings a new game mode to the mix called Extraction. This new 5 vs. 5 objective-based gametype tasks players will extracting assets from various locations. Once a squad has found an extraction site, they must plant a beacon and protect it. The defending team will receive a point if they control the beacon. If they fail to do so, however, they attacking team will be awarded a point. The first team to extract five points is the winner.

Microsoft made clear that those who own a War Games Map Pass should not purchase the Crimson Map Pack, as they will be charged twice if this occurs.

Two further Halo 4 expansions will follow the Crimson Map Pack. These are the Majestic Map Pack and the Castle Map Pack, due in February and April, respectively.

Nintendo fires back at Wii U criticisms

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has fired back at criticisms over the Wii U’s launch hiccups. Speaking to Gamasutra, the executive first addressed the system’s hefty day-one patch. He said this was a requirement to ensure the “very best product” for consumers.

“That creates a dynamic where our developers are working on elements until the very last point possible,” Fils-Aime said. “That’s why the system update was required on day one; and this is quite similar to what’s happened with other consumer electronic products.”

Fils-Aime added that the system update will be incorporated into new Wii U firmware sometime in early 2013 so users won’t need to download the large file.

The executive also defended the Wii U from hardware reviews that were less-than-praising. “Reviews of a system or review of a game really come down to the quality and capability of the reviewer,” he said.

Fils-Aime said he recognized there has been a “range of comments and commentary” (GameSpot’s review highlighted several shortcomings) on the Wii U, but claims other data proves users are flocking to, and enjoying, their time with the system.

“When I go on Miiverse and see how consumers are reacting to games like ZombiU or…Call of Duty, that tells me we’re doing something very, very positive,” he said. “Similarly, when I go on other consumer social networks and see other consumer reaction that is positive, I know we’ve done well.”

The Wii U launch was also met with Miiverse connectivity issues, but Fils-Aime does not foresee these problems springing up again during the ever-important holiday season.

“Without getting into a lot of technical details, the Miiverse [problem] was not purely driven by capacity,” he said. “That gives us confidence that come Christmas morning, those servers will not be challenged in the same way. Come Christmas morning, the Wii U will be available globally. We know there will be a lot of consumers utilizing their Wii U for the very first time. So we’re working very hard to make sure the initial customer experience is a good one.”

Fable II pulled from Xbox Live

Lionhead Studios’ role-playing game Fable II has vanished from Xbox Live, a GameSpot reader tipped the site this morning. The game is no longer available through the Games on Demand service on Xbox Live or via Xbox.com.

Additionally, the reader notes that Fable II remains in users’ download history for those who had previously purchased the game. However, attempting to re-download the game results in an error.

The game remains playable for those who have it installed on their hard drive or flash drive and its Knothole Island and See The Future expansions remain available to download.

A Microsoft representative was not immediately available to comment. Additionally, Lionhead Studios had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment at press time.

Microsoft took a unique approach with Fable II on Xbox Live upon release in 2009, as it was released digitally through five chapters. The first, which introduced players to their hero’s childhood and first experiences inside Albion, was made available for free. Upon completion of the first chapter, players had the choice to purchase the next installment to continue.

The Fable II: Game Episodes were also compatible with the disk-based version of the game, meaning players who had completed digital chapters could pick up where they left off should they decide to purchase the retail version.

The original Fable remains available on Xbox Live for $10, while most recent release Fable III is available digitally for $20.
