30 million Angry Birds downloads last week

Angry Birds franchise games were downloaded 30 million times during the Christmas week (December 22-29), developer Rovio Entertainment announced today. In addition, the franchise saw 8 million downloads on Christmas Day alone, which is up from 6.5 million last year.

Citing data from application analytics firm Flurry, Rovio also claimed that some 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day, meaning about one Angry Birds game was downloaded for every other new device activated.

Rovio had a busy 2012. The company released four new games (Angry Birds Space, Amazing Alex, Bad Piggies, and Angry Birds Star Wars) during the year, which also saw the Angry Birds series reach one billion downloads.

Last month, Rovio announced that the Angry Birds movie will release in summer 2016, helmed by Iron Man and Despicable Me producers.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is a big hit. The console version of Mojang’s indie sandbox game reached 5 million in sales on Monday, according to Mojang business developer Daniel Kaplan.

By comparison, the PC and Mac versions of Minecraft has sold 8.7 million copies as of this writing. Upon launch on May 9, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition became profitable in just one hour, selling more than 400,000 copies during its first 24 hours on sale, and breaking all previous Xbox Live arcade digital sales records. The game reached 1 million in sales in just five days, and dethroned Call of Duty from the top of the Xbox Live activity chart for one week in October.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios, the Scotland-based shop that built the Xbox Live Arcade titles Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Banjo-Tooie. It retails for $20. For more on the game, check out GameSpot’s review.

Capcom surveying fans about digital games

Capcom is asking fans to weigh in on where they believe the publisher should be heading in the digital space. Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson explained through the Capcom-Unity blog that the publisher has its own ideas as to its digital future, but also wants to hear from fans.

The Capcom survey includes questions regarding the publisher’s most iconic franchises including Bionic Commando, Street Fighter, Mega Man, and Okami. It asks if gamers would be interested in straight ports of classic titles, high-definition remakes, franchise reboots, franchise extensions, and entirely new game universes.

The survey also asks what price point is most attractive to gamers for future digital games, scaling from $10 to $40.

Svensson cautioned that the results of the survey are in no way a guarantee of future products, but said the data will be a factor in Capcom’s decision process moving forward. Svensson will share the compiled data after the holidays with teams in Japan, he said.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance not planned for Wii U

Kojima Productions has no plans to bring Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to Wii U, producer Yuji Korekado told Eurogamer. The company will consider porting the action game to PC following the console launch, he said, but not Nintendo’s new console.

“We aren’t currently thinking about that,” Korekado said. “One of the strongest appeals of the Wii U is the GamePad. However, we’ve constructed Metal Gear Rising so you can fully enjoy the game on the controllers whether it’s on the PS3 or the Xbox. So, currently we aren’t thinking about Metal Gear Rising on the Wii U.”

The Metal Gear franchise is not the only established series that has elected to skip the Wii U. BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6, Lego: Lord of the Rings, and Metro: Last Light will not appear on the console. Additionally, it is not clear if Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3 will ship for the system.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is due out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 19. For more on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

Levine: BioShock Infinite ending is unprecedented

Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine has offered a tease regarding the BioShock Infinite endgame. Speaking to Outside Xbox, Levine claimed the game’s ending is unprecedented and may not be embraced by all.

“The plot actually gets more interesting as it goes on,” Levine said. “The end of the game…I can’t tell whether people will like it or not like it. I can say it’s something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s like nothing you’ve actually experienced in a video game before. It’s quite unique and quite particular to this world, these characters, and this franchise.”

Levine did not share further details on what the BioShock Infinite endgame may have in store for gamers. However, he did say Irrational is working to make sure the story doesn’t decline in its second half, as the interviewer suggested happened in the original BioShock.

“You had a situation there where you had this amazing character and once he’s gone the story loses some of its steam,” Levine said. “That is something we took to heart in this game.”

BioShock Infinite is due out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC (but not Wii U) on March 26, 2013. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

Rockstar dreaming of GTA title combining all cities in the franchise

Rockstar is envisaging a future Grand Theft Auto title that combines all of the series’ past cities and allows the player to “fly” between them, according to an interview with Digital Trends.

In the interview, Grand Theft Auto series producer and head of Rockstar North Leslie Benzies talked about the legacy of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 10 years on, and revealed the developer’s hopes for the future of the franchise:

“Of course, at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities, and let the player fly between them and revisit their favourite areas; and in that context, re-imagining Vice City would be very interesting,” Benzies said in the interview.

Looking back at the scrutiny Rockstar received over the studio’s earlier titles, the developer also spoke of the challenges of creating mature content in games.

“I think the scrutiny we suffered … has helped keep us creatively sharp. We do not sit down for design meetings and say ‘let’s make the most appallingly violent game possible’. We choose to set our games in places where violence is, or was a part of everyday life: the Old West, or the criminal underworld, or cocaine-flooded Miami. If we censored ourselves and sanitized the violence, we would not be able to properly explore these settings and themes, and make the games we make. That is a compromise we have never been willing to make.”

On the mobile front, Benzies revealed that Rockstar would like to see a number of the studio’s previous titles on tablets and mobiles, although he did not state which in particular.

“Whether these are repurposed versions of existing games or entirely new IPs, I couldn’t say, but if you look at Chinatown Wars, you can see that we are always up for the challenge of designing games for new technologies and making the most of all their features, not just their processing power.”

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was relaunched on iOS and Android devices earlier this month to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the original open-world title.

Microsoft creating franchise that blends games and film

Halo maker Microsoft is staffing up for a new game that “blends the best elements of games and TV/film,” according to a job advertisement spotted by Videogamer. The company is seeking an experienced producer to come aboard to contribute to the “exciting new AAA core game.”

The job ads says Microsoft aims to “add new blood” to its existing stable of franchises that includes Halo, Fable, Forza Motorsport, and Gears of War with this new series. A qualified candidate for the position will not only need to have experience shipping AAA games, but also experience with TV and film production.

Last month, Microsoft rebranded its Vancouver outfit Black Tusk Studios and said the developer was at work on “Microsoft’s next big entertainment franchise.” Before that, Microsoft hired former CBS Television executive Nancy Tellem to join as the president of the company’s Entertainment and Digital Media division. She and her team will develop “unique, compelling storytelling experiences” at a new production studio in Los Angeles, California.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. rights disputed

Yesterday, bitComposer Entertainment announced it had acquired the worldwide exclusive rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Now, this claim has been contested. GSC Game World and CEO Sergey Grigorovich have issued a statement claiming that GSC Game World is in fact the sole rights owner for the franchise.

“In view of the rumors appearing in press, we find it necessary to inform that GSC Game World and Sergey Grigorovich remain to be the sole owners of all the intellectual property rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game series and the brand overall, including all the trademarks, the game universe, the technology etc,” the company said. “This can be easily verified with the trademark services online.”

The fate of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has been enshrouded in mystery of late. Earlier this year, rumor had it that Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda was to take over the series. Before that, developer GSC Game World was shut down, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 being canceled outright, despite efforts to keep the project alive.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are centered around Chernobyl, which suffered a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1986. In the original game, the town is subjected to a second dose of nuclear fallout, spawning a rash of hideously mutated monsters. GSC Game World released two follow-ups to the original game: Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.
