Pokemon announcement January 8

The official Japanese Pokemon website has posted a teaser for an “important announcement” next Tuesday, January 8. No further information is available.

The most recent core Pokemon games were Pokemon Black and White 2, which released in North America in October 2012 behind positive critical plaudits.

Both games cracked the NPD Group’s top ten United States sales chart during their debut month, but neither charted in November (a month filled with heavyweights like Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Halo 4).

Most recently, the Pokemon Company released an official Pokedex iOS app. Similar to its in-game counterpart, the $2 Pokemon Pokedex iOS app provides a range of data, including information regarding how to evolve certain Pokemon, locations where specific creatures are found, and which types of attacks Pokemon are susceptible to.

Tomb Raider multiplayer details

The first information concerning Tomb Raider‘s newly announced multiplayer mode has come to light. Details were published in this month’s issue of Official Xbox Magazine and were summarized by a Tomb Raider forum user.

First, Tomb Raider will feature the standard Team Deathmatch gametype. This mode pits a squad of Lara Croft’s allies against a group of natives referred to as “scavengers.” Gamers will alternate between sides throughout the course of a best-of-three match.

Maps will feature lever-based traps that shoot spikes out of walls, climable surfaces, destroyable environments, and a weapon arsenal that includes Lara’s iconic bow and arrow.

A second gametype is called “Rescue” and has one side (Survivors) collecting med-packs and delivering them to rotating destinations, while the opposite side (Scavengers) attempts to reach a requisite kill count to end the match.

A third gametype–”Cry for Help”–was teased. This mode will reportedly place emphasis on “discovery and collection,” though no other information is available.

Overall, players will be able to select from a “deep roster” of characters for Tomb Raider’s multiplayer component. Gamers will be equipped with a primary weapon, a sidearm, grenade-style projectiles, and a climbing axe that doubles as a melee weapon.

Tomb Raider is due out March 5, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

The Old Republic’s Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion revealed

The first expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic will arrive during spring 2013, Electronic Arts announced today. The Rise of the Hutt Cartel add-on increases the massively multiplayer online role-playing game’s level cap to 55, adds a new planet called Makeb, and features fully-voiced conversations.

Additional information regarding the expansion will be shared in the coming months, EA said.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion will be available by digital download for $20 (subscribers can grab the content for $10). Those who preorder by January 7 will receive five days of early access to the content.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel will not be sold as a boxed product in stores.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launched a year ago this month behind generally favorable reviews, selling 2 million copies in its first three months. Subscriber figures fell and the game added a free-to-play option last month.

Official Pokedex iOS app released

The Pokemon Company today launched an official Pokedex application for iOS devices in North America and Europe. This illustrated encyclopedia contains entries for more than 640 Pokemon creatures and launched last month in Japan. The Pokedex app costs $2, requires iOS 6, and is optimized for the iPhone 5. No mention was made of a release through Google Play.

Similar to its in-game counterpart, the Pokemon Pokedex iOS app provides a range of data, including information regarding how to evolve a certain Pokemon, locations where specific creatures are located, and which types of attacks Pokemon are susceptible to.

With the $2 purchase for the Pokedex app, users are granted access to the Unova Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 494-647). Other sets are available for $6 each, meaning players will need to spend about $26 to hold a complete Pokedex.

The additional packs include the Kanto Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 001-151), the Johto Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 152-251), the Hoenn Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 252-386), and the Sinnoh Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 383-493).

The Phantom Pain revealed

Tonight during the 2012 Video Game Awards show, a new intellectual property from Moby Dick Studio was revealed. The project is titled “The Phantom Pain,” and no information regarding platforms of release window was provided.

A trailer for The Phantom Pain was shown and it focused primarily on a man in a hospital with no memory of who he was. The trailer will be embedded here once it becomes available.

Moby Dick Studio appears to be a brand new outfit based in Sweden. Notably, its website shows the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 logos. The company says its aim to “deliver an uncompromising, exciting, and touching game experience to people all around the globe.”

It has since been suggested that The Phantom Pain could be connected in some way to the Metal Gear Solid series. Not only does the main character of the trailer resemble Snake from Metal Gear Solid, but also mysterious (and heretofore unknown) Moby Dick Studio CEO Joakim Mogren’s first name is in fact an acronym from Kojima.

GameSpot will update this story with additional information as it becomes available.
