Battlefield Premium actually a BF3 DLC bundle

Swedish developer DICE will bundle all Battlefield 3 downloadable content for a onetime fee, multiple sources have told Battlefieldo. According to the site, Battlefield Premium will launch on June 4 alongside a double XP promotional period for PC gamers.

Battlefield Premium will offer early access to upcoming BF3 map packs, say sources.

Battlefield Premium will offer early access to upcoming BF3 map packs, say sources.

The site reports that five Battlefield 3 expansion packs, as well as new camo and exclusive in-game items, are included with the purchase of Battlefield Premium. Additionally, players who purchase Battlefield Premium will receive early access to upcoming map packs, reports Battlefieldo.

To date, DICE has released just one add-on for Battlefield 3, the launch-day DLC Back to Karkand. Forthcoming map packs for the game include June’s Close Quarters, followed by Armored Kill and End Game. A fifth pack is rumored to launch in March 2013.

Earlier this week, the same site reported that Battlefield Premium would be a service, and offer a range of content drops in much the same way that Activision does with Call of Duty: Elite. No mention was made in today’s report of a price for Battlefield Premium. As of press time, DICE owner Electronic Arts had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

Dead Island 2 not in development

Earlier this week, a source told IGN Germany that Yager Development, which is presently finishing up Spec Ops: The Line for its June release, had been tapped to develop Dead Island 2. This is not the case, says Guido Eickmeyer, development director with the original game’s publisher Deep Silver.

Dead Island 2 is not in development, at least not yet.

Dead Island 2 is not in development, at least not yet.

“We are neither working with Yager on Dead Island 2 nor do we have any contractual agreement with Yager about any project at this point,” he said.

The developer did not rule out working with Yager in the future, saying there is a “legitimate chance” the companies will one day team up. He even went as far to say a future relationship could be on a project related to the Dead Island franchise.

Eickmeyer went on to explain that Deep Silver does not have Dead Island 2 “in concept or production with external partners,” and that it is currently considering options for a sequel.

Dead Island was developed by Polish shop Techland and shipped in September 2011 to generally positive review scores. The game shipped 3 million copies and welcomed various add-on packs. Speculation about a follow-up sparked in November, when Techland filed a trademark application for Dead World.

Though a sequel to Dead Island is currently out of sight, a movie based on the property may see the light of day. Film studio Lionsgate optioned the rights from Deep Silver after the game shipped last year. Development of the Dead Island film will be led by The Mummy producer Sean Daniel and Stefan Sonnenfeld, who did post-production work on various Pirates of the Caribbean films and X-Men: The Last Stand.

Amalur developer’s MMO Copernicus due June 2013

38 Studios’ massively multiplayer online game currently codenamed Project Copernicus is scheduled to arrive in June 2013. The news comes from Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee, who revealed the date today during a press conference attended by Joystiq discussing the future of embattled Providence-based 38 Studios.

How often does a state official announce a release date?!

How often does a state official announce a release date?!

Further details on the game were not revealed, as Chafee simply stated, “What I understand is Copernicus is June ’13.” Requests to 38 Studios for confirmation of the date were not returned as of press time.

Also during the briefing today, Chafee announced that 38 Studios’ $1.125 million check to the state of Rhode Island has cleared. This fulfills the company’s first obligated payment on the game studio’s controversial 2010 $75 million loan from the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC).

38 Studios founder Curt Schilling offered his first public comments on the issues surrounding the company last night through Facebook.

“To all the prayers and well wishes to the team and families at 38, God Bless and thank you! We will find a way, and the strength, to endure,” he wrote.

The RIEDC board Wednesday held an emergency meeting to discuss whether to provide additional assistance to 38 Studios to keep the company in business. While the board made no ruling on the matter, it is expected to consider the topic again on Monday.

Rumor: Battlefield 3 Premium Coming in June

Sigh. Battlefield 3 is not only ditching the massive maps and vehicles that define the franchise in the upcoming Close Quarters map pack, er, sorry, Close Quarters “expansion,” it appears Electronic Arts is once again following in Activision’s footsteps with a premium, paid, Call of Duty Elite-like Battlefield 3 service. Following up on its rumor report, fan site Battlefieldo claims it has received confirmation Battlefield 3 Premium is real and set for launch on June 4.

Electronic Arts and DICE have yet to confirm or deny a BF3 paid service is in the works, but really, does anyone think it isn’t? Battlefieldo, citing “multiple sources all saying the same thing” says it will officially launch on June 4 alongside a double XP weekend for PC players.

What will EA gladly take your money for? According to Battlefieldo, BF3 premium contains all five Battlefield expansion packs, early access to those packs, new camos, and exclusive in-game items.

I can’t help but remember the comments DICE Senior Producer Patrick Bach made about charging for Battlefield maps back in 2010 when the $15 CoD map pack became the norm: “We don’t ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together. We’re owned by EA but we’re still very much DICE.”

Guess this means DICE isn’t DICE anymore.

No word on Battlefield Premium pricing yet, but if EA continues to imitate Activistion, it will be $50 for an annual subscription. We’ve contacted DICE and EA seeking comment. We’ll update this post with any response.

Epic Reveals First Details of Unreal Engine 4

Epic Games showed off Unreal Engine 4 at a behind-closed-doors, hush-hush, NDA-restricted session at the Game Developers Conference in March. Now the studio is getting ready to share it with the rest of us. The curtain will be officially lifted at E3 in June. Today, it gets pulled back a bit courtesy of an exclusive interview with Wired, including Unreal Engine 4-generated screens.

Epic has put together a cinematic and playable demo using Unreal 4, and according to Wired, “it’s breathtakingly photo-realistic.” The 153-second clip features a demon knight in his volcano fortress, and is designed to show off everything Unreal 4 can do easily that devs have been struggling with for years: lens flare, bokeh distortion, dynamic lighting, lava flow, environmental destruction, fire, and more. Here are the first screens from the demo:

Epic also noted that Unreal Engine 4 features tools that will help studios cut game production time in half. What’s all this mean for gamers? If Epic can deliver on its promises, we should be seeing notably better looking and performing games coming down the pipeline faster than ever. Now the question becomes, what kind of rig will gamers need to take advantage of all of these bells and whistles?

We’ll have more for you on Unreal Engine 4 at E3 next month.

Battlefield 3 premium service launching June 4

Electronic Arts will release a premium service for Battlefield 3 on June 4 (the day of EA’s E3 2012 media briefing), a “reliable source” has told Battlefieldo. According to the site, the service will be titled Battlefield Premium, and it will grant players a range of exclusive content.

“Battlefield Premium is coming!” rumor says.

The first piece of content to be given to Battlefield Premium members will include a knife and a black dog tag, as well as a set of soldier camo, weapon camo, and assignments. Future content was not revealed, and it was not mentioned if Battlefield Premium will incur a subscription fee.

If Battlefield Premium comes to fruition, it will follow Activision’s Call of Duty: Elite, a free and paid service that gives members downloadable content and exclusives, among other things.

Additionally, EA has hinted at a Battlefield subscription service in the past. In March, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund said, “Like all other companies, we’re looking at how we can maximize our investment in this, get the most out of our investment, and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we’re not really talking about where that is yet.”

On top of Battlefield Premium, the site is also reporting that DICE is preparing to launch a new Battlefield 3 expansion pack during March 2013. It will follow the End Game DLC, which was announced in March 2012 as the final add-on headed to the new shooter.

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown hits June 5

It’s been five years since the last new Virtua Fighter game debuted on consoles, but the wait for a new installment in Sega’s flagship fighting franchise ends next month. Sega today announced that Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will arrive on the PlayStation Network on June 5, with an Xbox Live Arcade release set for June 6.

Sumo returns to Virtua Fighter in Final Showdown.

Sumo returns to Virtua Fighter in Final Showdown.

Described as an update and expansion to previous versions of the game, Final Showdown will sell for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points) on each system’s downloadable storefront. In addition to new modes, arenas, and customizable character items, the game will add two more combatants to the game’s roster. Virtua Fighter veterans will welcome the return of Virtua Fighter 3 sumo wrestler Taka-Arashi, while those eager to try out a new style can look forward to the debut of Jean Kujo.

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will also feature online multiplayer action for both systems. Sega has promised “little to no latency” for online matches, with leaderboards to keep track of rank. For more solitary fighters, Final Showdown will also include a new single-player mode where players fight “an army of opponents” on their own.

Sega is also planning a variety of downloadable content in the form of character customization packs available at launch. Players will be able to buy character-specific content for each of the game’s 19 characters for $5 (400 Microsoft points) per pack, or they can purchase two bundles of customization DLC, each selling for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points) and covering about half of the game’s roster.

Dead Space 3 Confirmed by Electronic Arts

We’ve seen a number of videogame protagonists squeezed through the wringer over the years, but few have experienced such a horrifying, mind-shattering journey as Dead Space’s Isaac. Hey, strategically dismembering countless humans turned grotesqueries will do that to a guy. Well, Visceral Games ain’t done with old Isaac yet. EA has confirmed Dead Space 3 is in development and set for launch by March 2013.

We’ve heard the rumors for months, and EA made it official during its quarterly conference call yesterday: a new Dead Space is on the way. Aside from the confirmation, EA didn’t provide any further details on Dead Space 3, but the publisher did say it will make “several big product announcements” at E3 in June.

So, how would you like to see poor Isaac physically and mentally beat up in Dead Space 3?
