Nintendo reveals Wii U GamePad prototypes

Nintendo has revealed the first Wii U GamePad prototypes, giving gamers a look at what the tablet-like controller looked like in its very first iterations. These were revealed and discussed in a new Iwata Asks interview, the focus of which was actually Wii U pack-in game Nintendo Land.

The first iteration was a Wii Zapper with an LCD screen placed on its barrel. According to a representative from Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis Development Division (EAD), this prototype allowed the company to better understand the two-screen approach it would ultimately decide to make the focus of the Wii U.

The second prototype resembled the final iteration of the GamePad more closely. It was created using a monitor with controllers on either end attached to the device with double-sided tape. Thirty game concepts were conceived with this controller, and it ultimately led to the creation of Nintendo Land.

Additionally, Nintendo said it discovered the appeal of “asymmetrical gameplay” as a result of this Wii U GamePad prototype. This time type of gameplay is when players take on different roles in a multiplayer game, as in Nintendo Land’s Chase Mario attraction.

The Wii U launched last month and has sold 425,000 units in the United States alone.

Windows 8 sells 40 million

Oh grow up, I keep hearing this non-sense about “oh no look how different Windows 8 is”.

No one is being forced into buying Windows 8, Microsoft are the only ones who have put themselves at risk, especially now when they have to still support Vista, 7 and 8.

You sign into Windows 8 and what happens?  You get the Metro looking menu, click Desktop and back to normal, scroll to the right to access Control Panel.  This upgrade was necessary to compete at the tablet level, it’s a new competition and unfortunately timing for upgrade looks bad but still necessary.

We got the same whining with Windows 7, that dried out pretty quickly and now its with Windows 8, that will dry up pretty quickly as well.

Tell me something if you were working at Microsoft and saw how the likes of Apple were making billions selling things which look the same, why wouldn’t you as a competitor do the same?

Tablets weren’t Apple’s idea, Microsoft were foolish to think it would kick off back then.  They are behind and now catching up, the way people have been fooled with Apple don’t complain when it’s them but find time to whine about Microsoft.

Bungie releases Destiny concept art

Halo maker Bungie have released an official screenshot from their upcoming game, rumoured to be titled Destiny.

The first look at Bungie’s next title, Destiny.

The screenshot, posted on Bungie’s official site, came as a response to a leaked marketing document reportedly provided to IGN by a reader, which outed story details and concept art from the upcoming game.

According to IGN, Bungie has confirmed the document was prepared by an advertising agency and that it provides authentic details surrounding the game’s plot.

“We weren’t quite ready, but we will be soon, and we can’t wait to finally show you what we’ve really been up to,” Bungie wrote on its official site. “Stick around, we haven’t even started yet.”

The leaked document describes Destiny as a “fun and accessible” game with a “deep, tangible and relatable” universe that is compared to the Star Wars franchise. The game is also described as “social at its core”.

A Bungie spokesperson commented on the leaked document, telling IGN: “We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net. Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.”

According to the document, Destiny’s plot revolves around an alien ship bent on destroying Earth and the “knights” tasked with defending what’s left of humanity. The document also shows images bearing the Destiny logo along with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 icons and the URL Destiny.com (currently password-protected).

Destiny is Bungie’s first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. Legal documents from May suggested that the game will be released for the Xbox 360 in 2013, with a 2014 release slated for the PlayStation 3.

No Metro: Last Light for the Wii U

Metro: Last Light developer 4A Games has confirmed that it will not be bringing the sequel to Nintendo’s next-generation console due to technical limitations.

Speaking to Now Gamer, 4A Games chief technical officer Oles Shishkovtsov told the publication that the Wii U has a “horrible, slow CPU”.

His colleague Huw Beynon reiterated the sentiment, telling the publication there would not be a Wii U version of Metro: Last Light, because the studio “couldn’t justify the effort required”.

“We had an early look at it, we thought we could probably do it, but in terms of the impact we would make on the overall quality of the game–potentially to its detriment–we just figured it wasn’t worth pursuing at this time,” Beynon said in the interview. “It’s something we might return to. I really couldn’t make any promises, though.

“Given the size of the team, and compared to where we were last time, just developing for the PlayStation 3 is a significant addition.”

Metro: Last Light, which is published by THQ, was initially shown on a Wii U sizzle reel during the console’s unveiling at E3 2011. It later also appeared in a leaked Blockbuster Wii U database listing.

Metro: Last Light is slated for release in early 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

New Grand Theft Auto V trailer

absolutely incredible trailer, NOW i’m excited. I enjoyed GTA4 but SA was my favorite for many reasons…this likes a tried true spiritual successor to SA with a return to Los Santos it’s shaping up to be even more of a convincing virtual city that Liberty City was in GTA4. The sheer details in the environment! They really captured the look and feel of LA. Just wow at the varying types of gameplay shown from this trailer.

I thought GTA4 pushed the boundaries as far as story telling in a GTA game, but GTAV looks to be pushing every boundary on so many levels…story, gameplay, graphics, the world characters…i’m actually surprised at how excited I am right now!!

Let me say this though – the graphics look amazing, they do, but I think if you check out how heavily they are using focusing vs out of focus objects/environments, motion blur, and other heavy effects, I think it’s safe to say that GTAV has found the limits of this console generation graphically. Given that it’s an enormous open world, there obviously has to be give takes, but from a technical standpoint GTAV is superbly impressive yet I feel like I can tell that they’ve more or less maxed out these consoles.

I think this game shouldve been made for the next generation. That being said, I woudn’t want to wait/buy a new console to play this I’m still very impressed and I haven’t even played the game. Who knows what they will be able to do with GTA6 next gen!!!!

BioShock Infinite

After a lengthy radio silence marked by concerning reports of project leads departing, BioShock Infinite is back with a boomstick. Our first look at the supernatural-powered shooter since March is a barrage of color and characters that should help allay any fears that Irrational Games somehow lost its way. Step right up for the Beast of America trailer.

I don’t want the first few seconds of this trailer to end. Featuring gorgeous imagery of the floating city in the clouds, it seems to show off Columbia before the war. I want to throw on my old-timey bathing suit and straw hat and spend the day on the beach at Battleship Bay.

Looking fantastic. Then again, Infinite has looked pretty fantastic since the day it was revealed way back in 2010. I’m ready to play this sucker and February suddenly looks very far away.
