Divergence Online seeking crowdfunding

Divergence Online, a sandbox sci-fi MMO that has been on hiatus since its original announcement in 2006, is now back in development, and is seeking crowdsourced funds to keep its momentum.

According to an IndieGogo crowdfunding page, the goal the project needs to hit is $50,000. Players who contribute $10 are guaranteed beta access, while players who pay more can get other tiered rewards ranging from an exclusive character class to a personal in-game island.

The project has raised $860 at this point in time, with 57 days left before it closes. For more information, check out the game’s IndieGogo page.

Back in 2006, developer Stainglass Llama announced that it was creating a sci-fi sandbox MMO called Divergence that allowed players to toggle between an action-style interface or a traditional auto-attack system. The game also featured a non-linear world, open PvP, lootable corpses, and unique races and breeds.

Square Enix North America hit by layoffs

Square Enix has reduced the workforce of its Los Angeles, California, office this week, laying off an undisclosed number of staff.

The publisher confirmed the news to Massively, with Senior Director of Public Relations Riley Brennan telling the site:

“In order to ensure it is operating effectively, the Square Enix Los Angeles office has reduced its workforce.”

“This was a difficult decision, and we wish the best for those affected by these changes. The decision will not have any impact on the operations of MMO titles.”

The layoffs will reportedly not impact the upcoming launch of MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

In August this year, Square Enix posted a $26 million quarterly loss. Its remaining slate of games for the current fiscal year includes high-profile new releases Tomb Raider and Hitman: Absolution.

Diablo III for consoles ‘up and running’

Diablo 3 was a piss poor, there’s too many problems with this game,,

Auction House (overpowered weapons that would ruin the progression, flow of the gameplay, balance and difficulty curve) that also ruin the core gameplay instead for fun doing quest for solo-play (or with your friends) it filled with acute gold diggers and addicts like that you’ve seen a lot on Facebook games, Poker, or Cheap grade MMO.

Incompetent Direction, Zillion of Poor and Sloppy Design,, Poor Implementation of Difficulty, Simplified Stats, Customization that being taken away from you, cramped environments like playing limited consoles games rather than free-roam like it’s predecessor,, Cartoony vibe,, Garbage story-line, No LAN Support, No Mods Support, Train-wreck DRM, Game-breaking Bugs, etc, etc

and Horse level rainbow was an Insult to their long-time fans.

I Waited too long, only to play this piece of garbage, and boy,, they spit on me,, and Ha! it got 3.0 user score on Metacritic!!

Avatar Star to launch in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines

A new competitor is about to enter the South East Asian MMO shooter scene, with upcoming title Avatar Star confirmed for release in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines in 2013.

The game–which is developed by Pearl Digital and distributed in the region by Cherry Credits–is a third-person shooter that focuses heavily on player customisation of in-game characters. The game will also feature three character classes–the Gunner, Guardian, and Assassin. Each class has unique characteristics, such as invisibility for the assassin, team health boosts for the Guardian, and shields for the Gunner.

The game is set for a closed beta in early 2013, with an exact date yet to be announced. Gamers in Singapore can, however, play an alpha build of the game this weekend, with Avatar Star playable at the Licence2Play event being held at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center. The event takes play from December 7 to 9, with Avatar Star playable at Exhibition Hall E.

GTAV PC petition nets 50,000 signatures

Here’s what I think:  from a hardware perspective, PC will always dominate.  I love my PS3 but my PC can run circles around it.  What this really boils down to, in my opinion, is interface.  Cars and aircraft just don’t feel right on a mouse and keyboard.  Yes, you can buy controllers and such but the core of the PC gaming community involves mouse and keyboard.  And to that, FPS/RPG/MMO/RTS/TBS have gotten PC written all over it.

In the end, I’ll probably buy the day one copy for my PS3 and once I’ve completed it and gotten bored with it, I’ll pick up the PC version and install every mod I can find and have a great time.

Flame on fanboys, I’ll be over here having fun with my video games instead of arguing about them.

Square Enix considering same-sex marriage for Final Fantasy XIV

One of the new features in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is the ability for avatars to get married. At launch, only avatars of opposite sex can get hitched, but that may change.

Square Enix discussed the matter of same-sex marriage, among other topics, in a nearly two-hour video posted to YouTube. A representative from the company said Square Enix has been carefully considering allowing same-sex marriage, though no final decisions have been made.

“As for same-sex marriage, this is an extremely controversial topic that has been under discussion in the MMO world for the past few years,” the company said. “As you know, each country has a different way of thinking. So first we would like to start out with opposite-sex marriage, and then consider the feedback from our players in order to make a careful decision.I can’t say whether or not it will be possible at this point in time. I’d like to keep dialog open with our players as we deliberate the matter.”

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a re-launch of 2010′s Final Fantasy XIV. It is in development for PC and PlayStation 3 and has been rebuilt from the ground up. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

Halo team seeking devs with MMO experience

Yup, this obviously means they’re making a Halo MMO, instead of, you know, maybe just wanting someone with experience building infrastructure that can support tons of people at one time, like, say, an MMO would.

Nope. It MUST mean a Halo MMO is coming.

Civilization MMO coming to Asia

Sigh. Are all games trying to break into the online sphere? Civilization is primarily a single player game, but I have had plenty of fun playing online in multiplayer matches. I’ll admit though, I am interested to see how this will work (or not, as the case may be). Civilization takes a long time to play, and having people spontaneously joining games is a bad idea. Getting spawn killed in civ would be far worse than in an FPS because it is such a time investment. If they simply make the world huge, then there is the potential for either thousands of pathetic city states or a few supermassive alliances. The city states may actually be fun because of all the little schemes. However, it would take an extensive diplomacy system that no online game seems to have. (To my knowledge. Please let me know if I am wrong) With the super-alliances, it would take a tremendous amount of coordination to pull off effectively from a military standpoint. Oh, not to mention that Civ is a turn based game. Imagine waiting for 1000+ players to take their turns. Or, alternatively, imagine having your computer render it all once you acquire extensive map vision. I predict a game that is more like Civ Worlds, the FB “social experience” .game. Oh, and since its coming out in Asia, I predict P2W mierda like paying to unlock upgrades for your soldiers and/or overpowered civs. Ooohhh, lets make them pay for the Canadian Civilization which gets double oil reserves, gets double production from clearing forest and swampland, and the ability to instantly cease all hostilities! With anyone! Alternatively, you can spend 5 bucks on the Zulu: insanely fast early game units that destroy absolutely everything out there cause they cost almost nothing to build.
