Some Assembly Required: Mod Your Own Avengers Games

Considering the awesome film just smashed the opening weekend box office record, it seems like a huge oversight that there’s no official Avengers game available to let us play as Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and the other two. So PC gamers have, as usual, taken matters into their own hands and come up with a solution: Here’s a collection of mods you can use to assemble your own Avengers adventure.

Freedom Force

Once upon a time, PC gamers didn’t have much choice in terms of quality superhero games. There was Freedom Force, a clever 2002 throwback to Silver Age comics, and that was about it. Its was basically The Avengers, with Minuteman standing in for Captain America, or Man-Bot looking like Iron Man. But if “basically the Avengers” wasn’t good enough, well, there was the Avengers Special mod for the game.

“Avengers Special” is one of those mods built on the “more is better” philosophy, with dozens of characters and different skins crammed into a loose storyline. There are also Freedom Force’s customizable/random “Danger Room” missions, giving you the opportunity to set up whatever kind of fight you want with dozens of major and minor heroes and villains, even from different stories and companies. So if you want a game where you can make Hulk punch Thor, Loki, and Batman (?!?), you can’t beat Freedom Force.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Then came the X-Men Legends/Ultimate Alliance games offered quality licensed superhero games (that played fairly similarly to Freedom Force…). The first Ultimate Alliance game added a pile of heroes from the wider Marvel universe, including every major character from the Avengers movie, as long as you have the mod that unlocks the system exclusives. But that wasn’t Avenger-y enough for some, who released Avengers mod for a game that was already essentially about the Avengers. Yeah, we’re confused too.

Skyrim

You know what would be a perfect Avengers mod? Having Thor, the Norse God Of Thunder, as a companion in Skyrim. That’s so perfect, so obviously fitting, so downright essential…that it hasn’t happened. Modders: get on this. Until then, we’ve got a couple half-steps in the right direction: first, a skin for a playable Thor that does look fairly close to Chris Hemsworth, and second, a Mjolnir hammer to be found in the game. We really just need the red cape and some barks from the movie, and we’re gold.

Fallout: New Vegas

The Courier almost seems like a superhero already. A miraculous awakening after near-certain death, she then slowly gains more and more power, until the entire Mojave Wasteland bends to her whim. That power can be developed in any number of ways—New Vegas is designed for that kind of player freedom. Wanna shoot lasers and wear heavy armor, like Iron Man? You can do that. Perhaps a massively strong, intellectually challenged Hulk-type Courier? Also viable. With the “Avengers Costumes” mod, you can pick an appropriate superhero garb, so the person you’re role-playing on the inside looks like an Avenger on the outside.

Just Cause 2

One of the problems with adding Iron Man skins to most games is that Iron Man can fly. That’s cool. Really cool. But flying characters are fairly rare in most games that have characters to skin. Rico Rodriguez, protagonist of Just Cause II, can’t fly. But he does have a grappling hook that lets him come close. Zoom from a cliff to a helicopter, punch out the pilot, fly as high as you can, jump out and free-fall wherever you want to on the island of Panau. And, with this mod, you can do it as Iron Man. It even hides certain weapons, like pistols, so you can look like you’re fighting from your power-suit just like Tony Stark.

Grand Theft Auto IV

At first glance, Iron Man and Nico Bellic don’t have much in common. Tony Stark was born into wealth and privilege, Nico Bellic arrived a poor immigrant. Iron Man can fly, Nico gets winded after running for a block or two. Stark buys cars, Bellic steals them. But if you look a little closer, you find that both men represent the American Dream through subtle character depictions…nah, we’re just kidding. The Iron Man skin for GTAIV looks cool, though.

The Sims 3

HULK SOMETIMES THINK LIFE PRETTY GOOD. BUT HULK ALSO WORRIED THAT HULK STUCK IN RUT. YOU KNOW HULK LOVE BOOKS SO PART-TIME JOB AT BOOKSTORE SEEM LIKE GOOD IDEA, BUT VERY LITTLE OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT. HULK WANT MORE MONEY MAYBE BUY BETTER EXERCISE MACHINE BUT HULK ALSO WORRIED THAT DIFFERENT JOB WILL CUT INTO HULK’S “ME” TIME.

HULK ALSO HAVING TROUBLE WITH GIRLS. HULK THINK HULK DO EVERYTHING RIGHT WITH LADY AT PUBLIC POOL, BUT SHE APPARENTLY LESS IMPRESSED BY HULK.

ON BRIGHT SIDE, HULK SEE TEENAGER WEARING T-SHIRT WITH HULK ON IT.

New Soul Sacrifice Teaser: Demon’s Souls Vita?

For nearly a month, we’ve been speculating about Soul Sacrifice, a new PlayStation Vita game that popped up in Japanese magazine Famitsu. See, the title was revealed as an ad, but Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is holding an official announcement event on May 10th — this isn’t something you do for just any old game, and that thought and the title “Soul” led some to think that Demon’s Souls developer From Software might behind the title.

Today, there’s a new teaser from PlayStation Japan’s YouTube page, and although it’s packing the Japan Studios logo, that title font certainly looks familiar…

What do you think the game is all about? Let us know in the comments and make sure you check back later this week to see what the reveal as all about.

Rumor: LucasArts Making New Star Wars Game

There was a time when word of a new Star Wars game was reason for celebration. But after a string of disappointments, including the Force Unleashed series and most recently the absurd Han Solo dance-off known as Star Wars Kinect, I can only cross my fingers and hope that LucasArts won’t further embarrass itself with a mysterious new project called Star Wars 1313.

Siliconera reports that Lucasfilm registered a number of domain names tied to the Star Wars 1313 name last week. It also filed a Star Wars 1313 trademark — not for a film or television series, but for a videogame.

The rumor mill suggests Star Wars 1313 will be an online game tied to Boba Fett, because the Fett-man evidently used CT-1313 as an alias in a Star Wars novel.

Here’s to hoping LucasArts brings back the stellar mix of third- and first-person, Force powers, light sabers, and blasters of the Star Wars: Dark Forces series.

Company of Heroes 2 Official Reveal on May 7

Somebody needs to get Relic Studios a decoder ring or something. They can’t seem to keep secrets to themselves. We found out through a leaked image of PC Gamer’s upcoming issue that Company of Heroes 2 is officially coming soon. Today, Relic sent out word that they will do a more official reveal on May 7.

The announcement was mailed out with a print of the front page of The New York Times, dated June 22, 1941. The headline reads “Hitler Begins War on Russia.” Perhaps a hint of what’s to come in the campaign of the much-anticipated strategy sequel? Just a reminder of how that ended: Hitler got really cold, bailed, and a whole bunch of Germans and Russians got killed. Things got real all up in the Russian tundra.

IGN Readers Vote: Digital vs. Retail

Last week we asked you readers to sound off on Nintendo’s digital future. The company plans to allow gamers to either buy their games in traditional retail packaging or download them instead. This all starts with New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS and will extend to the Wii U’s launch.

But how do IGN’s readers plan on purchasing their games in the future? According to our poll results, represented in the infographic below (care of our very own Lucas M. Thomas), very few of you plan on going digital only. Check out the results, then be sure to sound off with your own thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

New Max Payne 3 Mutiplayer Trailer

Here’s something that bothers me about Max Payne 3′s multiplayer: Rockstar keeps calling it “noir.” It’s got a ton of interesting ideas, and I’m super excited to get my hands on it, but come on. Gritty voice-overs and guns do not a noir make. Thankfully, the new multiplayer trailer doesn’t dwell on it for long, so neither will I. Let’s focus on what the multiplayer modes look to do well.

Perhaps the coolest mode Rockstar is showing off with their new multiplayer trailer is the Gang Wars mode. Two teams fight there way through five chapters, each with different objectives. These conflicts drive a “dynamically shifting” story that is influenced by who comes out on top. Victories lead to advantages in the next round. Nice.

I also like the idea of Crews. Working like Squads in Battlefield games, players get extra experience for sticking together from match to match. Very briefly, the trailer mentions bonuses for sticking with your Crew across different games, but no other information is given. Damn you, voice over guy! I want to hear more about that. Wait, where are you going? Oh, you were just a voice on my computer. Okay, well. Bye.

Nintendo Preparing for Third Party Digital Downloads

Nintendo has confirmed to IGN that it plans to support both third and first party content for its new digital initiative. Late last week the publisher revealed that, starting this August with New Super Mario Bros. 2, all self-published games will be available on launch day in digital and packaged forms. This plan applies to both the 3DS and Wii U.

“We are currently preparing a program for third parties but have nothing specific to announce at this time,” a Nintendo representative told IGN, when asked about the company’s plans to include other publishers. There’s currently no word on prospective partners, nor a timetable for their possible involvement.

Nintendo previously released a statement noting it planned on “significantly expand its digital business.” Digital content will not only be available through the eShop, but also in retail stores as printed codes that can then be redeemed online.
