Hitman: Sniper Challenge Spin-Off Leaked

A Hitman spin-off, Sniper Challenge, has been revealed in a US magazine.

The latest issue of Game Informer contains an advert for the title, which features a replayable sniper mission and online scoreboards. There’s also the lure of as-yet unnamed prizes for the top marksmen, along with an exclusive upgradeable rifle that may be used in the main game.

If you want to start looking down the scope, you need to pre-order Hitman: Absolution. This gets you a code that will allow you to play Sniper Challenge on the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360.

Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more news on Thursday: developers IO Interactive yesterday tweeted that they had a “major” Hitman: Absolution announcement to make then.

EA Investing in Next-Gen, Focusing on Digital Distribution

EA announced today that it’s made over 1.2 billion dollars in “digital revenue” during its fourth fiscal quarter. That is a massive 47 percent year-over-year growth.

In addition to shifting its structure to focus more on digital distribution, EA also revealed it has invested 80 million USD in game development on next-gen “Gen4″ consoles

Full game downloads were also up 76 percent year-over-year, pushed by Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3. This comes right alongside the news that EA’s digital distribution service, Origin, has 11 million registered players, generating approximately $150 million in 10 months.

Digital revenue get a boost from EA’s Play4Free group, whose lineup generates almost $2 million per week. The press release states that “several more EA brands will be introduced in the Play4Free portal in fiscal 13.” Could we see a Dead Space or Mass Effect title in the works?

Digital sales are also helped by EA’s acquisition of developer PopCap, whose newest Bejeweled game is EA’s top selling title in Apple’s AppStore.

EA further predicts that digital revenue will continue to grow, expanding by 40 percent in fiscal 2013.

SWTOR Subscriber Base Shrinks

Electronic Arts reported a drop in Star Wars: The Old Republic’s subscriber base, down to 1.3 million from the 1.7 million figure given in February 2012.

This news comes after the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic’s 1.2 Legacy update, which added a large amount of new content to the game including dungeons, a PvP arena, and incentives to start new characters and replay content as different classes.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a subscription-based MMO and requires active players to pay 15 USD per month after purchasing the base game, which starts at 60 USD. As of the end of April 2012, 2.4 million units of Star Wars: The Old Republic have sold through.

Despite the lower subscriber numbers, EA considers Star Wars: The Old Republic to be the number two MMO in the West, and says it’s stable and profitable. Most of the subscriber number drop was attributed to the loss of more casual players. Expect more of an emphasis on elder game PvP and guild features moving forward in 2012.

BioWare also hinted at what’s in store for the upcoming 1.3 update.

EA/Nexon Buyout Rumor Debunked

Last week, reports began circulating that free-to-play publisher Nexon was set to purchase Electronic Arts. The rumor came via financial publication Bloomberg, who was tipped off by a report in a Korean newspaper stating that Nexon “contacted EA about making an offer.”

Now, Bloomberg has debunked the report, revealing instead that talks between Nexon and EA are actually related to the South Korean distribution of EA’s FIFA Online 2.

The news comes via three anonymous sources who claim that the companies are not discussing a merger, but instead are focused on “Nexon’s online servers and developers in Asia,” and specifically “Nexon’s expertise in persuading players to spend real money on virtual items such as team jerseys and player-experience points.”

Following the initial rumor, EA stock rose six percent, marking the highest stock price for the company since March. According to Bloomberg, the FIFA Online 2 partnership with Nexon could be finalized as early as next month.

Nexon declined to comment, but we’ve reached out to EA and will update with any additional information we receive.

Next Xbox hardware already in manufacturing

Microsoft has said gamers shouldn’t expect to see its next gaming console anytime soon, but developers might already be getting their hands on the system. IGN is citing an unspecified source with the news that the next Xbox hardware has entered manufacturing.

The next generation of hardware is beginning to loom large over the industry.

The next generation of hardware is beginning to loom large over the industry.

The report says hardware for the next Xbox has been produced at the Austin, Texas branch of electronics firm Flextronics, which was the first manufacturer of the original Xbox and one of three Microsoft initially employed to work on the Xbox 360. The firm also reportedly created a testing group focused specifically on “comprehensive marketing, software, and hardware tests of the next Xbox.”

As for what exactly is being produced, IGN speculates Flextronics is producing dev kits so the next Xbox developers have hardware on which to create their games. Microsoft had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment as of press time.

Zenimax Announces The Elder Scrolls Online

Always wanted to party up in the Elder Scrolls universe with a few friends? You’ll get your chance. Zenimax Media has confirmed that Bethesda’s long-running RPG is getting the massively multiplayer treatment. The Elder Scrolls Online is set for launch in 2013.

Game Informer revealed its June cover story today, officially unveiling the rumored Elder Scrolls MMO.

“It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years,” game director told Matt Firor Game Informer. “The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

Here’s what we know: The Elder Scrolls Online will be set a millennium before the events portrayed in TES V: Skyrim, and allow players to venture across the entire world of Tamriel. The big baddie in the MMO will be daedric prince Molag Bal, who is, in typical daedric fashion, attempting to transform all of Tamriel into a demonic nightmare.

While this may be welcome news to some, it sounds like a bad idea to others — our resident MMO expert, Leif Johnson, included. Read why Leif thinks Zenimax should Keep its MMO Out of Elder Scrolls!

We’ll have more news on The Elder Scrolls Online soon.

May Hurray Bundle Announced by Indie Royale

I’m willing to bet some of your hard drives are filling up with indie titles received via the pay-what-you-want goodness of indie bundles. Well, good news! Let’s fill up those final gigabytes with the games offered by The May Hurray Bundle, the latest from the good folks at Indie Royale.

Indie Royale works a bit differently than some of the other bundles. Buyers have to pay at least a minimum, which can be brought down by folks paying above a certain dollar amount. $10 brings everyone’s minimum down a cent, $25 for five cents, and so on. Kind of a cool little karma experiment.

This time around, they’re giving out five games. Dungeon Defenders is fairly unquestionable as the star of the show, so if you’re looking for a cheap way to pick up the action RPG/tower defense hybrid, here’s a good way to do that. Also included: Containment: The Zombie Puzzler, retro racer Data Jammers: FastForward, the nearly impossible to describe Brainpipe – A Plunge to Humanity, and space strategy Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space. Not too shabby.

Skyrim DLC news teased for tomorrow

The first day of May is set to be a big one for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim fans. Bethesda teased this afternoon that news of the first downloadable content for the role-playing game will arrive tomorrow. Additionally, the company confirmed today that the Kinect update for the Xbox 360 version will hit tomorrow.

Bethesda is kicking off May with big news, it appears.

Bethesda is kicking off May with big news, it appears.

Last week, Bethesda said news of Skyrim’s first DLC was possible for this week. Specifics regarding the mystery content are unknown, but a forum user recently dug into the game’s latest patch information and found clues suggesting the DLC will focus on snow elves and add the crossbow weapon.

Gamers may want to manage their expectations for tomorrow’s Skyrim DLC announcement. Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines wrote on Twitter today that only a “tidbit” of information regarding the DLC will be shared, “not a complete [download] of info.”

As for Skyrim’s Kinect update, Bethesda earlier this month revealed that the role-playing game would add Microsoft’s voice-recognition technology. At the time, the company said the update would arrive in April, a date it will miss only by one day.

When Kinect compatibility for Skyrim launches tomorrow, it will do so only in English. The French, Italian, German, and Spanish versions of the update are presently in final testing, Bethesda said. A full list of English voice commands for Skyrim are available at Bethesda’s website.
