Researcher: World of Warcaft players make better employees

Playing World of Warcraft will make a person a better employee in the corporate world, according to digital culture researcher John Seely Brown. Speaking in a new Big Think YouTube video, Brown said he would rather hire a high-level World of Warcraft player than an MBA student from Harvard.

“To understand these massive multiplayer games like World of Warcraft, do not think about it as just game play, but look at the social life on the edge of the game,” Brown said.

Brown claimed that such high-level World of Warcraft players benefit from the fundamental collaborative nature of the game, specifically with regards to guilds and raiding. He said these guilds, which can number in the hundreds of players, are fueled only by a player’s passion, not any external reward or bonus.

“When we look into the social structures and the knowledge capability, refining, and generation capabilities of this guild structures, there is something going on here,” Brown said. “Now, these are not just self-organizing groups. Basically every high-end guild has a constitution. The leaders of these guilds also have to do dispute adjudication all the time. They also have to be willing to say, ‘Let’s measure ourselves.’

Another reason why a World of Warcraft player would make a better employee, according to Brown, is because players must create “dashboards,” or ways in which players measure themselves and things happening around them. In the corporate world, Brown said, these dashboards are applied by managers, but that isn’t the case in World of Warcraft.

“In World of Warcraft you invent a dashboard for yourself,” Brown said. “So this whole idea of thinking about how do I build measurements to facilitate my own performance for me and me alone becomes very interesting. And in fact in the World of Warcraft there’s a simple mantra I encounter all the time. If I ain’t learning, it ain’t fun.”

Ultimately, Brown said employers would be smart to hire a World of Warcraft player because these gamers have accelerated levels of passion and curiosity.

“But it gets back to this notion of passion, it gets back to this notion of curiosity, and it gets back to this notion that this is an interest-driven phenomenon that unleashes exponential learning of a dimension that’s almost unimaginable any other way,” he said.

Blizzard bans ‘several thousand’ Diablo III users

Blizzard Entertainment has banned “several thousand” Diablo III players founding to be using botting hacks, the company said in the game’s official forums.

“In addition to undermining the spirit of fair play, botting, hacking, and other forms of cheating can also cause technical problems with the game as well as contribute to performance issues with the Battle.net service,” a Blizzard community manager said.

The Blizzard representative reiterated that it is the studio’s goal to foster a stable, safe, and enjoyable online environment for legitimate players. Blizzard will continue to monitor play and will “take action as needed.”

For now, Blizzard said players who witness such botting hacks should report the malfeasance by emailing the company at hacks@Blizzard.com. In the future, however, this will be easier. An upcoming Diablo III patch will add the ability for players to report this behavior directly through the game client, Blizzard said.

According to the report, an artist who worked on the title has shared some assets that were created prior to the title being cancelled by EA in 2008, following the closure of EA Chicago.

The released screenshots of the game show Captain America, Spiderman, and the Hulk as playable characters, a comic book aesthetic, as well as features including a campaign mode and online play.

The deal between Marvel and EA dates back to 2004, when the companies announced a multiyear agreement for fighting games featuring famous Marvel characters alongside new EA-created heroes.

The first game of the deal was Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, a poorly received effort that saw its price slashed by 40 percent less than two months after its release.

In early 2009, EA and Marvel jointly agreed to discontinue development of future Marvel titles.

Free-to-play Xbox Live game sees 1.2 million players

Xbox Live’s first free-to-play game Happy Wars has been downloaded more than 1.2 million times worldwide, developer Toylogic announced today. The game launched in October behind a middling critical reception.

Though Happy Wars is free to play, gamers can purchase “Happy Tickets” with real-world money to upgrade their characters’ appearance and equipment. This can also be achieved by unlocking “Happy Stars” through play. Additionally, gamers must hold an Xbox Live Gold subscription ($60 per year) to download Happy Wars.

The game supports simultaneously play for up to 30 players (15 vs.15), who will take part in free-for-all battles against one another.

Happy Wars is not the only free-to-play game in development for Xbox Live. Signal Studios’ third-person role-playing game Ascend: New Gods will also be available through the platform for free when it launches in “several months.”

Valve wants Dota 2 on tablets

Valve wants to bring Dota 2 to tablets. Company boss Gabe Newell told Kotaku that a tablet version of the free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game is one of the “interesting projects” that the company is currently working on, though initial tests have left much to be desired.

“We were working on getting Dota 2 running on some tablets,” Newell said. “That ended up being kind of a disappointment. But the good news is that tablets are getting faster very quickly, so I think we’ll get the kind of performance we want and other game developers want in the near future.”

Dota 2 is scheduled for release on PC and Mac. The game combines action and real-time strategy elements in multiplayer matches that pit teams of player-controlled heroes against one another. The game will include integrated voice chat and computer-controlled characters that will take over for players who disconnect during play sessions, as well as a coaching system, where veteran players will have the chance to tutor newcomers.

Official Pokedex iOS app released

The Pokemon Company today launched an official Pokedex application for iOS devices in North America and Europe. This illustrated encyclopedia contains entries for more than 640 Pokemon creatures and launched last month in Japan. The Pokedex app costs $2, requires iOS 6, and is optimized for the iPhone 5. No mention was made of a release through Google Play.

Similar to its in-game counterpart, the Pokemon Pokedex iOS app provides a range of data, including information regarding how to evolve a certain Pokemon, locations where specific creatures are located, and which types of attacks Pokemon are susceptible to.

With the $2 purchase for the Pokedex app, users are granted access to the Unova Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 494-647). Other sets are available for $6 each, meaning players will need to spend about $26 to hold a complete Pokedex.

The additional packs include the Kanto Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 001-151), the Johto Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 152-251), the Hoenn Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 252-386), and the Sinnoh Pokedex (Pokemon numbers 383-493).

Final issue of Nintendo Power pays homage to origin

Cait I see where you’re coming from, but I gotta say I use the Play Magazines app on my phone and have a subscription to Game Informer for $3 a month. Looks exactly like the real thing and also adds “interactive” stuff, only if you want, such as clicking a picture and getting a pop up video of a comment from the developer or something.

I think the whole preferring a physical copy thing is a nostalgic restraint. I was the same way, especially since I’m such a big reader. I HATED Kindle for years….until I actually used it.

The reality is…it’s infinitely more convenient. Not only price wise, but I don’t have to worry about carrying a flimsy magazine or a 1400 page book with me everywhere I go. Automatic book marks, can read in the dark while lying on your side (no having to sit uncomfortably or lose that edge of sleep feeling as you turn the lights off and throw any excess pillows off the bed). Almost any book available at any time.

By no means am I saying you’re wrong or anything like that, I really did feel the same way for years, but I do encourage you to give it a try. It is the 21st century after all, digital IS the future whether we like it or not. The sooner we embrace that, the better it will become.

Yoshi’s Land spotted for Wii U

Longtime Mario sidekick Yoshi is featured in Wii U launch game Nintendo Land, but he may be getting a game of his own. Listings at Best Buy and its subsidiary Future Shop for “Yoshi’s Land” have appeared and even revealed details about the unannounced game.

The product description for Yoshi’s Land says players will see Yoshi as never before: in high definition. Additionally, the game will make use of the Wii U GamePad for dual-screen play and will also boast “full integration” with Nintendo’s social service Miiverse.

A Nintendo representative was not immediately available for comment.

The Wii U launched in North America on November 18 and sold 400,000 units during its launch week. The system comes to Europe and Australia November 30 before launching in Japan on December 8.
