Battlefield Premium actually a BF3 DLC bundle

Swedish developer DICE will bundle all Battlefield 3 downloadable content for a onetime fee, multiple sources have told Battlefieldo. According to the site, Battlefield Premium will launch on June 4 alongside a double XP promotional period for PC gamers.

Battlefield Premium will offer early access to upcoming BF3 map packs, say sources.

Battlefield Premium will offer early access to upcoming BF3 map packs, say sources.

The site reports that five Battlefield 3 expansion packs, as well as new camo and exclusive in-game items, are included with the purchase of Battlefield Premium. Additionally, players who purchase Battlefield Premium will receive early access to upcoming map packs, reports Battlefieldo.

To date, DICE has released just one add-on for Battlefield 3, the launch-day DLC Back to Karkand. Forthcoming map packs for the game include June’s Close Quarters, followed by Armored Kill and End Game. A fifth pack is rumored to launch in March 2013.

Earlier this week, the same site reported that Battlefield Premium would be a service, and offer a range of content drops in much the same way that Activision does with Call of Duty: Elite. No mention was made in today’s report of a price for Battlefield Premium. As of press time, DICE owner Electronic Arts had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

Rumor: Battlefield 3 Premium Coming in June

Sigh. Battlefield 3 is not only ditching the massive maps and vehicles that define the franchise in the upcoming Close Quarters map pack, er, sorry, Close Quarters “expansion,” it appears Electronic Arts is once again following in Activision’s footsteps with a premium, paid, Call of Duty Elite-like Battlefield 3 service. Following up on its rumor report, fan site Battlefieldo claims it has received confirmation Battlefield 3 Premium is real and set for launch on June 4.

Electronic Arts and DICE have yet to confirm or deny a BF3 paid service is in the works, but really, does anyone think it isn’t? Battlefieldo, citing “multiple sources all saying the same thing” says it will officially launch on June 4 alongside a double XP weekend for PC players.

What will EA gladly take your money for? According to Battlefieldo, BF3 premium contains all five Battlefield expansion packs, early access to those packs, new camos, and exclusive in-game items.

I can’t help but remember the comments DICE Senior Producer Patrick Bach made about charging for Battlefield maps back in 2010 when the $15 CoD map pack became the norm: “We don’t ever want to charge for our maps and insisted to EA that this attitude was crucial when it came to keeping our community happy and playing together. We’re owned by EA but we’re still very much DICE.”

Guess this means DICE isn’t DICE anymore.

No word on Battlefield Premium pricing yet, but if EA continues to imitate Activistion, it will be $50 for an annual subscription. We’ve contacted DICE and EA seeking comment. We’ll update this post with any response.

Far Cry 3 beta included with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Far Cry 3 doesn’t come out until September 4, but eager gamers can get a taste of Ubisoft’s upcoming first-person shooter a little early. The publisher today announced that it will hold a two-week-long multiplayer beta this summer, with specialty retailer GameStop giving away invites to customers who buy Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Do not trust this man. He is not a GameStop employee and will not assure you a copy of Far Cry 3 when it launches in September.

Do not trust this man. He is not a GameStop employee and will not assure you a copy of Far Cry 3 when it launches in September.

There is a catch, as customers will need to be enrolled in GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards customer loyalty program in order to receive the invite. When they purchase Ghost Recon on its May 22 launch, PowerUp members will be given a code to redeem at a GameStop website. On that site, players choose whether they want to be in the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 beta test, and they will receive the actual code via email once the beta goes live. Ubisoft will also be giving codes out through its social channels and the game’s official site.

The Far Cry 3 beta will include six playable classes, as well as multiple maps and modes. Players will be able to upgrade and customize their characters, as well as get a feel for how the game’s zip lines and combat sliding mechanics will impact multiplayer.

Far Cry 3 will cast players as Jason Brody, a man stranded on a strange tropical island similar to the setting of the first Far Cry. Gamers will head out into this “savage paradise” and “slash, sneak, and shoot” to survive in a world that has “lost all sense of morality.”

Battlefield 3 premium service launching June 4

Electronic Arts will release a premium service for Battlefield 3 on June 4 (the day of EA’s E3 2012 media briefing), a “reliable source” has told Battlefieldo. According to the site, the service will be titled Battlefield Premium, and it will grant players a range of exclusive content.

“Battlefield Premium is coming!” rumor says.

The first piece of content to be given to Battlefield Premium members will include a knife and a black dog tag, as well as a set of soldier camo, weapon camo, and assignments. Future content was not revealed, and it was not mentioned if Battlefield Premium will incur a subscription fee.

If Battlefield Premium comes to fruition, it will follow Activision’s Call of Duty: Elite, a free and paid service that gives members downloadable content and exclusives, among other things.

Additionally, EA has hinted at a Battlefield subscription service in the past. In March, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund said, “Like all other companies, we’re looking at how we can maximize our investment in this, get the most out of our investment, and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we’re not really talking about where that is yet.”

On top of Battlefield Premium, the site is also reporting that DICE is preparing to launch a new Battlefield 3 expansion pack during March 2013. It will follow the End Game DLC, which was announced in March 2012 as the final add-on headed to the new shooter.

Street Fighter X Tekken sales blamed on ‘cannibalism’

Street Fighter X Tekken didn’t perform up to Capcom’s expectations, and the publisher thinks a glut of recent fighting game releases is to blame. In a postearnings QA session posted to the publisher’s investor relations site today, Capcom addressed the game’s worldwide sales of 1.4 million.

Maybe the fighting genre needs to take a breather.

Maybe the fighting genre needs to take a breather.

“Sales of Street Fighter X Tekken have fallen short of our plan,” the company’s statement confirmed. “We believe one of [the] causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time.”

Since the beginning of 2011, Capcom has released a range of fighters, including Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, and Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition. The same time frame has also seen a number of fighting games launched by other publishers, including Mortal Kombat, SoulCalibur V, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, and King of Fighters XIII.

The publisher also addressed Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City shipping 2 million units as a vindication of its business plan. “This shows the success of our decision to try the new approach of using an alliance with an overseas development company,” the company said.

Blizzard Announces Character Profiles

d3profile
Have you ever wanted to know how many hapless foes your friends have slain, or what jewels they socket their breastplates with? Or maybe you simply wonder incredulously just how many hours they had sink into gaming each week in order to get all that sweet sweet loot? Well, Blizzard is now planning to answer these questions for you. The official site’s new Profiles feature, debuting “soon” after Diablo 3′s release this Tuesday, will allow players to keep tabs on one another’s in-game accomplishments.

“If you’re curious about the exploits of your fellow forum posters, it’ll be a simple matter to click over to their profiles,” the official blog says, kind of creepily. The first implementation of Profiles will detail each player’s heroes, their equipped gear, their skills, and their progression in the campaign. All the better to race you to the upper tiers of videogame heroism with, my dear.

In the future, the ability to check out your friends’ artisans and achievements will also be added. This is pretty much the Diablo equivalent of World of Warcraft’s Armory — an excellent tool for judging other players’ abilities (as well as a platform for others to pick apart your own gearing decisions). Though a specific date for the rollout of this feature hasn’t been announced, Blizzard says it will happen “shortly” after Diablo 3′s release this Tuesday. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts or additional suggestions for online stalkery at the Website Features forum.

Kid Icarus sequel unlikely

Before the March launch of Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS, the cherubic Nintendo mascot Pit went more than two decades between adventures. In a new interview, Uprising director Masahiro Sakurai told IGN he thinks the wait will be even longer for Kid Icarus’ next outing.

Kid Icarus might have a few gray hairs the next time we see him.

Kid Icarus might have a few gray hairs the next time we see him.

When asked if Uprising could spawn future projects, Sakurai quickly squashed the notion. “If by ‘lasting universe’ you mean to ask if there’s a sequel, the answer is no,” Sakurai told the site, adding, “because we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we’ll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years.”

Released in March, Kid Icarus: Uprising saw Pit take on the forces of Medusa once again, combining air-based target shooting with grounded platforming and considerable customization. The game also features a multiplayer mode where up to six 3DS owners can take each other on in teams of three.

Diablo III Amazon’s most preordered PC game ever

Diablo III isn’t just Blizzard’s most preordered effort ever; it’s also Amazon.com’s most preordered PC game of all time.

Gamers are welcoming this devil's arrival with open arms (and wallets).

Gamers are welcoming this devil’s arrival with open arms (and wallets).

A representative with the online retailer told GameSpot this morning that the action role-playing game today became the site’s most preordered PC game of all time, beating out previous Blizzard efforts like Starcraft II and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

The news follows yesterday’s announcement by Activision Blizzard that Diablo III was the developer’s most preordered title ever. However, that assessment came with a catch, as the company’s preorder tally included World of Warcraft Annual Pass subscribers, who are entitled to a free copy of Diablo III through a special promotion.

Diablo III is set to launch May 15. For more on the game, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.
