Xbox One, PS4 box art revealed?

The official Battlefield 4 website (via Kotaku) has posted what appears to be Xbox One and PlayStation 4 box art designs.

It is possible that the images in question are mock-ups made by Electronic Arts, as neither Microsoft nor Sony have released official designs of yet.

If the images are indeed genuine, it means Microsoft is carrying over its familiar green-hued design, while Sony is shifting to a new blue theme similar to its PlayStation Vita line.

The Xbox One and PS4 are due out later this year, though pricing information and specific release dates have not been divulged.

Sony points users to PS4 video on ‘slow news day’

Just hours before Microsoft will unveil its next-generation Xbox, Sony has directed its Twitter followers to watch the new PlayStation 4 teaser video because “it’s a slow news day.”

When Sony announced the PS4 in February, Microsoft’s director of Xbox Live programming Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb took a shot at the company, saying “Announce a console without actually showing a console? That’s one approach.”

Microsoft’s next-generation reveal event begins at 10 a.m. PDT. GameSpot is in attendance at the presentation and will host a live-stream of the event beginning at 9 a.m. EDT.

Sony’s Panopticon revealed as Freedom Wars

Sony has confirmed that its Panopticon trailer from last week is actually for a PlayStation Vita exclusive called Freedom Wars.

Panopticon is the name of the region where Freedom Wars takes place. It’s a penal colony set 100,000 years in the future, where everything is constantly monitored by almost 13 million security cameras.

Sony’s Japan Studio describes the game as a rescue multiplayer action game, though does not give any additional information about how the game will play.

A new three-minute trailer reveals more about the game’s setting and context, though reuses much of the footage seen in last week’s teaser.

The game’s official website suggests more information about the game will be made available on May 30.

Freedom Wars is due out in Japan sometime in 2014.

Sony’s Japan Studio is also currently at work on PlayStation 4 platformer Knack, which was announced along with the console back in February.

Sony shares leap 8 percent after Xbox One announcement

Sony’s shares jumped up 8 percent immediately after rival hardware maker Microsoft formally unveiled its next-generation Xbox One console.

At time of writing, Sony shares on the New York Stock Exchange are up 8.35 percent on where they were before Microsoft took to its custom-built stage at its Redmond campus to announce the successor to the Xbox 360. Sony shares are currently trading at $22.72.

Sony, which announced its own next-generation PlayStation 4 back in February, has recently been on the offensive. It teased the first shots of its still-unseen PlayStation 4 hardware yesterday, and took to Twitter today to jest that the day of Microsoft’s Xbox One announcement was a slow news day.

Microsoft calls its Xbox One an “all-in-one” experience designed to function as the heart of a user’s living room. The new hardware, which will launch worldwide in 2013, features 8GB of RAM, a Blu-ray drive, an x64 processor, and USB 3.0.

PlayStation 4 hardware teased by Sony hours before next Xbox unveil

Sony has teased shots of the PlayStation 4 hardware hours before Microsoft is due to announce its next-generation Xbox.

The 39-second video shows a blurred black box, which is presumably the PlayStation 4 hardware, along with numerous quick, close-up shots of various parts of the hardware. “See it First at E3,” says the video.

Shots in the trailer show close-ups of angular corners, vents, and a circular edge. The Dual Shock 4 controller can also be seen.

The teaser ends with the time and date of Sony’s E3 2013 press conference: June 10 at 18:00 PDT.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 in February, though the hardware was not shown and Sony said its design was not yet finalised. The next-generation console is due to be released globally later in 2013.

Sony seeking ‘Sturmendrang’ trademark

PlanetSide 2 and EverQuest developer Sony Online Entertainment has filed a trademark application for “Sturmendrang.”

Filed May 13 with the United States Patent Trademark office (via NeoGAF), it covers multiplayer online role-playing games.

In addition, the website www.sturmendrang.com was registered last month by Jason Fermo, who according to his LinkedIn page, works at SOE as a senior network engineer.

The word “Sturmendrang” appears to be a form of Sturm und Drang, the 18th century German literary movement that translated means “Storm and Stress.”

The phrase is alluded to in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series via the Durmstrang Institute for Magical Learning.

A Sony representative was not immediately available to comment regarding the trademark application.

Bungie shoots down Destiny for PS Vita rumor

Bungie’s Destiny will not be revealed on the PlayStation Vita. The developer has confirmed with IGN that recent rumors of the shared-world shooter coming to Sony’s latest portable are false.

Yesterday, an image (click to expand) appeared online that contained Destiny imagery and appeared to be marketing material for a game called Destiny of Spirits. Bungie not only confirmed this to be a fake, but also told IGN that “when we announce something, we’ll use our current logo.”

When Bungie announced Destiny in February, the game’s preorder page suggested that the first-person shooter was in fact coming to the PlayStation Vita, as well as other unannounced platforms like the PC, Wii U, and Xbox 720.

Though Destiny is not in development for the PS Vita, Sony may have something planned for Destiny of Spirits, which the company trademarked last month. The company has yet to discuss plans for whatever this may be.

Destiny officially launches for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 next year. More information about the game is expected to be divulged at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo next month.

Major Sony investor calls for the corporation to split up

A major New York hedge fund investor has called for Sony to split its wide-reaching business apart, saying that separating the entertainment division–responsible for blockbuster movies like Skyfall–will allow the PlayStation-owning electronics division to thrive.

The New York Times reports that the hedge fund of billionaire Daniel S. Loeb, Third Point, has invested stocks worth $1.1 billion into the Japanese electronics giant and is now one of its largest shareholders. Loeb is said to have personally delivered a letter calling for Sony to be split up to CEO Kazuo Hirai on Tuesday.

“Sony has stood for innovative engineering and consumer satisfaction for decades,” says Third Point’s letter to Sony. “From televisions to gaming consoles to handsets, Sony epitomizes the proud legacy of Japanese manufacturing ingenuity, superior product design, and excellent user experience.”

“However, many casual observers would be surprised to learn that while Sony is electronics, much of its current value is derived from a hidden gem–Sony’s Entertainment division. Like many conglomerates [Third Point has] invested in previously, Sony has two strong businesses facing different challenges side by side, each obscuring the other’s true worth.”

“To maximize Sony’s overall success, we believe the Company should change the structure of its ownership of Sony Entertainment. Doing so will strengthen Sony by reducing its burdensome
debt, thereby providing additional resources and capital to focus on revitalizing the resurgent
Sony Electronics.”

A Sony spokesperson replied to the letter by saying that the company is “focused on creating shareholder value by executing on our plan to revitalize and grow the electronics business, while further strengthening the stable business foundations of the entertainment and financial services businesses.”

Hirai is expected to talk about the future of the 67-year-old company next week.

Sony announced earlier this week that it has returned to profitability for the first time in five years.

New PlayStation 4 ad is fake

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Sony confirmed with Kotaku that the PlayStation 4 advertisement is fake.

The original story follows below

A video published last night on YouTube claims to offer the first look at the PlayStation 4 itself.

The video, titled “Reveal PlayStation 4 PS4 E3 2013,” features a series of men and women staring into the camera while the familiar button symbols are shown reflected in their eyes.

A voice asks “You want to play?” while clips of games and the PS4 system itself cycle through.

It is unclear if the video is in fact an official Sony production or a fan mock-up. Sony was not immediately available to comment at press time.

The PS4 itself was not shown during the platform’s announcement in February, something competitor Microsoft was quick to point out. At the time, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida apologized for keeping the system under wraps, noting its design had not yet been finalized.

“I’m sorry we did not show the hardware,” Yoshida then said. “But we have plans from now–in February–through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things.”

Sony’s E3 2013 presentation is slated for Monday, June 10.
