38 Studios Unveils Project Copernicus

There has been a lot of not-so-great news lately about the financial state of 38 Studios over the last several days. Despite all of that, today the studio showed off a brief trailer that unveils that their MMORPG is indeed for real, and it’s looking pretty darn good to boot.

Very little is still known about this project (like what it’s going to be called), other than the fact that R.A. Salvatore is helping pen the lore behind this world, much like he did with the recently released Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Perhaps more details will be revealed at E3 in a couple of weeks. What do you think so far? Personally I think it looks a hell of a lot better than that first screenshot of Elder Scrolls Online.

Nascar the Game: Inside Line racing this fall

Activision and developer Eutechnyx are returning to the racetrack this fall. This morning, Activision announced Nascar the Game: Inside Line, a new licensed racing title due out later this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii.

Eutechnyx is circling the oval again with Nascar the Game: Inside Line.

In development at United Kingdom-based studio Eutechnyx, the title will feature various Nascar Sprint Cup Series drivers, teams, and cars, as well as 23 licensed racetracks. Additionally, Nascar the Game: Inside Line adds a career mode and new online features, which include “realistic race weekends.”

Nascar the Game: Inside Line is a sequel to Nascar 2011: The Game, which shipped to a tepid reception for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii in March 2011. That title was the first to come of Eutechnyx’s hold on the Nascar license.

Epic Reveals First Details of Unreal Engine 4

Epic Games showed off Unreal Engine 4 at a behind-closed-doors, hush-hush, NDA-restricted session at the Game Developers Conference in March. Now the studio is getting ready to share it with the rest of us. The curtain will be officially lifted at E3 in June. Today, it gets pulled back a bit courtesy of an exclusive interview with Wired, including Unreal Engine 4-generated screens.

Epic has put together a cinematic and playable demo using Unreal 4, and according to Wired, “it’s breathtakingly photo-realistic.” The 153-second clip features a demon knight in his volcano fortress, and is designed to show off everything Unreal 4 can do easily that devs have been struggling with for years: lens flare, bokeh distortion, dynamic lighting, lava flow, environmental destruction, fire, and more. Here are the first screens from the demo:

Epic also noted that Unreal Engine 4 features tools that will help studios cut game production time in half. What’s all this mean for gamers? If Epic can deliver on its promises, we should be seeing notably better looking and performing games coming down the pipeline faster than ever. Now the question becomes, what kind of rig will gamers need to take advantage of all of these bells and whistles?

We’ll have more for you on Unreal Engine 4 at E3 next month.

Lionhead hiring for next-gen MMO-like title

With Fable Heroes out the door and development on Fable: The Journey coming to a close, what will developer Lionhead Studios build next? According to a job listing at the United Kingdom developer, the studio is staffing up to create an all-new next-generation title with massively multiplayer online genre qualities.

Is Microsoft making a console MMO?

Is Microsoft making a console MMO?

The job ad (which has since been removed) was spotted by indefatigable Internet sleuth Superannuation and reported on by MCV. According to the description, the title will be a role-playing game designed with a “radical take on how cooperative and multiplayer gameplay feeds into the experience.” Additionally, the title will blend single-player and multiplayer into one experience, claims the ad.

On top of that, the new game will boast a “complex progression system, multiple routes through the campaign, and an MMO-like multiplayer experience that will affect the outcome of the player experience, and many other attributes surrounding their profile (such as the environment and outcome of certain actions).” Further specifics were not offered.

While the job ad in question is no longer available, a Lionhead Studios
requisition for an experienced server programmer seeks a person with knowledge of MMO titles.

Lionhead Studios is familiar with role-playing games, having created the Fable franchise, but the company has never built an MMO. As of press time, Microsoft had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

If Lionhead Studios is in fact working on an MMO, the company will do so without Peter Molyneux. He left Microsoft in March, and is currently heading up 22 Cans, a new independent developer.

Burnout dev hiring for PS Vita

Burnout developer Criterion Games is reportedly hiring for a PlayStation Vita project. Eagle-eyed Internet sleuth Superannuation spotted a job listing for a software engineer at the United Kingdom-based developer that called for a person to optimize and tune the “game resource system for the PS Vita.”

The job listing has apparently been amended, as it now states this person will optimize and tune the “game resource system for other platforms.” As of press time, Criterion Games parent company Electronic Arts had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

Criterion Games released Burnout Crash last year on Xbox Live, but has not made public any new projects. The last retail effort from the shop was 2010′s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which won warm reviews and shipped over 5 million copies. A new Need for Speed title has been confirmed to ship in 2012.

Last August, job listings at the studio hinted that a forthcoming project from the company would be set in an open world–like the studio’s 2008 hit Burnout Paradise–and ship for new platforms. For more on Criterion Games’ latest title, check out GameSpot’s review of Burnout Crash.

Smite Closed Beta Announced

Hi-Rez showed me something with Tribes: Ascend — a level of polish, quality, and balanced fun I simply wasn’t expecting. Now the studio is getting ready to fire up its next project, and as a long-time DOTA and League of Legends fan, I’m already clicking my mouse in anticipation. Smite, Hi-Rez’s mythological, third-person spin on the MOBA genre is set to enter closed beta in two weeks.

It’s got the minions, towers, three lanes, shops, and 5v5 battles of traditional MOBAs, but Smite shifts from the top-down perspective to third person, putting the focus on action. See how it’s shaping up in the recent video from PAX East:

Interested? Register for the Smite beta at the game’s home page. If you’re selected, you’ll be able to do battle with the gods beginning on May 31st.

Smite is free-to-play with five gods (Ra, Kali, Ymir, Sun Wu Kong, Artemis) open to all, and 10 others (Zeus, Odin, Hades, Hel, Anubis, Vamana, Agni, Au Kang, He Bo, Bastet) available for unlocking through time or real-world money. If you really want in on the closed beta, you can pre-order the 10-god Smite Starter Pack for $20. All pre-orders come with guaranteed beta access.

We had the chance to speak with Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris about Smite in February. Check out our Smite preview to learn more.

Step Inside the Sound Booth for Batman: Arkham City

Celery makes for an awesome sound effects tool. The audio proof is delivered by the Dark Knight when he breaks criminals’ bones in Batman: Arkham City. Yup, they did that with celery. In honor of Batman’s upcoming GOTY edition, Rocksteady is providing a behind-the-scenes look at Arkham City’s development, and today we learn how the studio made the punches, capes, and snapped limbs sound so good.

Batman: Arkham City GOTY, featuring the new DLC adventure, Harley Quinn’s Revenge, is set to ship for consoles in September. We’re still waiting on Rocksteady and Warners for the PC release date.

Crystal Dynamics Delays Tomb Raider Reboot

Young Lara Croft needs more time to grow if she’s to be properly prepared for her Tomb Raider reboot. And no, I’m not making a joke about her cup size. Crystal Dynamics has bumped the new Tomb Raider from fall 2012 to early 2013 in an effort to deliver “the best game of our careers.”

In a post on the official Tomb Raider forums, Crystal Dynamics boss Darrell Gallagher broke the news, stating that the studio believes it has something “truly special” on its hands, something that deserves more time baking in the development oven.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve,” Gallagher said. “We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.”

So, along with BioShock Infinite, another of my most anticipated games of 2012 has officially become one of my most anticipated games of 2013. Good news, though: Crystal Dynamics says it will show off Tomb Raider at E3 in June, so we’ll all get to see how it’s shaping up.

Mercenary Ops Opens Beta Registration

Tired of searching the Soldier of Fortune classifieds for steady work, I’ve applied for a full-time position with Mercenary Ops. The F2P online third-person shooter from the studio formerly known as Epic China, Yingpei Games, is now accepting beta registrations on its Facebook page, and the first group of successful candidates will open fire in June.

If you’ve been missing Gears of War on PC since the original in 2007, Mercenary Ops might be the game you’ve been waiting for. See what I mean in the “squint and see GoW” trailer below:

Interested? “Like” Mercenary Ops on Facebook for your chance at a beta key. Yingpei Games says those who are selected will have access to six different modes — including co-op — when the beta opens on June 20.

Tomb Raider delayed to 2013

The upcoming Tomb Raider title currently in development at Crystal Dynamics has been delayed from Q3 2012 to Q1 2013.

The announcement came today via a post on the official Eidos Games forums, in which Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher outlined the developer’s reasons for delaying the title:

Lara is going to have to hang out just a little bit longer.

Lara is going to have to hang out just a little bit longer.

“Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest-quality game,” Gallagher said in the message. “In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from fall 2012 [spring in Australia] to the first quarter of 2013.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game, and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice, and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.”

As a consolation prize, the studio also released a screenshot in preparation for more information about the game, which will be revealed during this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June.

Last year, it was revealed that Crystal Dynamics would be exploring Lara Croft’s beginnings in the upcoming Tomb Raider title. Earlier this year, the studio also announced that it had no plans to release the game on the Wii U.

Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Tomb Raider is the first instalment in the series since 2010′s downloadable multiplayer-focused Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and the first standalone game since 2008′s Tomb Raider: Underworld.
