Walking Dead shooter trailer a fake

The gameplay trailer for The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts published yesterday was in fact made by a fan and is not a genuine asset from Activision or developer Terminal Reality, though it does use actual in-game footage.

Activision community manager Dan Amrich explained on his blog that the video was created by a fan using footage from an IGN video preview of the game.

Amrich apologized for posting the video in the first place and for “being part of the misinformation and the constant problem of unreliable information found on the Internet.”

The video, originally posted to a YouTube account that has since been deleted, caused a stir upon its release yesterday, with many gamers bemoaning its quality.

Survival Instincts was announced in July 2012 and is based on AMC’s The Walking Dead TV series. It will be set in rural Georgia and focus on brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon. Players will be able to choose whether to confront the undead head-on or attempt to avoid detection.

Survival Instincts is currently in development at Terminal Reality. That studio’s previous credits include Atari’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as well as Majesco’s BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2. The company’s most recent release was Kinect Star Wars.

Survival Instincts is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

GLaDOS voice appears in Pacific Rim trailer

The first trailer for Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro’s new film Pacific Rim has been revealed, and it features a voice gamers may know. The voice of Portal character GLaDOS, performed by Ellen McLain, appears in the trailer as a robot AI.

As for the film, Pacific Rim is a science-fiction movie where giant mechanized robots controlled by humans take on massive creatures who have risen up from the sea. The trailer suggests McLain’s character will be on the side of the humans.

del Toro bringing the voice of GLaDOS to his next picture is not much of a surprise. The filmmaker told Kotaku last month that he is a “big fan” of Valve, noting that “Portal and Left 4 Dead have been instrumental family experiences at my house.”

Dark Souls II on the way

Dark Souls is getting a sequel. Tonight during the 2012 Video Game Awards show, Dark Souls II was announced via a new trailer.

Information regarding platform availability or a release window for Dark Souls II was not announced at the show. However, a subsequent press release officially announcing the game has confirmed a range of details for the game. First, it is in development at From Software for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Notably, Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki is not the chief mind behind Dark Souls II. He will serve as a “supervisor” on the project, with development instead led by From Software director Tomohiro Shibuya.

Dark Souls II will feature a new hero, a fresh storyline, and an “unfamiliar” setting. “Epic battles with gruesome enemies” are promised, as well as a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that aims to “put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others.”

The original Dark Souls (itself a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls) has sold over 1.19 million units in North America and Europe since launch during October 2011. Despite its commercial success, From Software said that a sequel was not a sure thing.

The Phantom Pain gets official screens

The Phantom Pain was revealed during the 2012 Video Game Awards, with many suggesting it is in fact not a new game at all, but rather an elaborate tease for a Metal Gear Solid project. The game’s first trailer depicted a character bearing a resemblance to Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series, and now developer Moby Dick Studio has released official screens of the game.

The new screenshots are pulled from the trailer and show a one-armed character waking from a coma with no recollection of who he is or what has happened to him.

The Phantom Pain’s developer, Moby Dick Studio, is also enshrouded in mystery. The Stockholm, Sweden-based developer’s website lists Joakim Mogren as its CEO. This person, however, is not a known figure. And in fact, Joakim is an acronym for Kojima.

NeoGAF has compiled a detailed list of examples as to why The Phantom Pain may be masquerading as a new Metal Gear Solid game.

The Phantom Pain revealed

Tonight during the 2012 Video Game Awards show, a new intellectual property from Moby Dick Studio was revealed. The project is titled “The Phantom Pain,” and no information regarding platforms of release window was provided.

A trailer for The Phantom Pain was shown and it focused primarily on a man in a hospital with no memory of who he was. The trailer will be embedded here once it becomes available.

Moby Dick Studio appears to be a brand new outfit based in Sweden. Notably, its website shows the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 logos. The company says its aim to “deliver an uncompromising, exciting, and touching game experience to people all around the globe.”

It has since been suggested that The Phantom Pain could be connected in some way to the Metal Gear Solid series. Not only does the main character of the trailer resemble Snake from Metal Gear Solid, but also mysterious (and heretofore unknown) Moby Dick Studio CEO Joakim Mogren’s first name is in fact an acronym from Kojima.

GameSpot will update this story with additional information as it becomes available.

Fan re-creates GTAV trailer in Lego form

Lego developer Traveller’s Tales has adapted numerous franchises into block form, including Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and most recently, Lord of the Rings. But what would it look like if the company were to make Lego: Grand Theft Auto?

One fan has answered that question, creating a Lego rendition of the first Grand Theft Auto V trailer, which was released in November 2011.

The Lego version matches up with the actual trailer and includes the locations, characters, and vehicles from the Rockstar-produced material.

GTAV is officially due out during spring 2013 only for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though Rockstar cofounder Dan Houser said PC and Wii U versions are “up for consideration.”

Wii U NFC in Rayman Legends trailer only a tech demo

A trailer for Wii U game Rayman Legends suggested the title would leverage the system’s near-field communication (NFC) technology, allowing users to place objects on the GamePad to beam them into the game. However, creative director Michel Ancel has clarified the situation, saying the trailer was only displaying a possible feature, not something concrete.

“We didn’t announce this officially and it was more the kind of experiment we do when working on new hardware like the Wii U,” Ancel told the Official Nintendo Magazine. “We had prototypes of this and we believe that having real objects manipulating gameplay could be quite innovative. But again, this was a prototype and we won’t discuss it until it’s ready to demonstrate its full potential.”

None of the dozens of Wii U launch titles take advantage of the Wii U GamePad’s NFC technology. This includes Activision’s Skylanders Giants, which instead uses its own Portal of Power to bring real-world objects into the game.

Rayman Legends was originally intended to launch in November, but is now expected in early 2013.
