Assassin’s Creed Discounted On Steam

AC2
Is that the hapless gurgle of blood welling in an enemy’s slashed throat or your oh-so-classy gurgle of excitement? Today, the Assassin’s Creed series is copping a quick, clean slash — to its pricetag. Steam has sliced away up to 75% of the cost of all games in the series.

The Steam Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed sale is seeing the mysterious dropping of prices all over the place. A half-price discount has snuck up on Assassin’s Creed Revelations and its associated DLC packs. Everything else gets a clean 75% — that includes the deluxe editions of both Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2. It works out to $5 and $7.50 respectively (and this is where I probably get to do the required “X game is discounted” price comparison of videogames to a fast-food lunch. Gaming is the more nutritious activity, right?).

The Assassin’s Creed series blends seamlessly into the backdrop of the Ubisoft weekend, which sees everything in the publisher’s catalog discounted by 33%. Don’t forget to check back tomorrow — who knows which games will be taking the (price) hit next?

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 abandoned?

 PeterDuck

I consider Cartel’s release one of the most sad moments of this Gen…

Lately, there haven’t been any good Wild West themed games, especially on the PC,since we didn’t get RDR.CoJ franchise started out great, brought us two very good(if slightly flawed) Western shooters, and I was hoping it would continue growing and improving further, but no,Ubisoft had to mess it all up,make one of the dumbest decisions I’ve ever saw in gaming, which turned the franchise into some generic MP “hip-hop” shooter…

Ubisoft: No Far Cry 3 Multiplayer Beta on PC

Like me, you may have taken interest in the announcement from Ubisoft yesterday that it will open the Far Cry 3 multiplayer beta this summer. You also might have noticed that the announcement lacked mention of a PC version. A simple oversight? I contacted Ubisoft for clarification and received the bad news that I’ll pass along to you: there are no plans for a Far Cry 3 beta on PC.

Freedom. That’s what I remember most fondly about Far Cry, the franchise that got Crytek and its CryEngine off to an impressive start on PC back in 2004. The immersive sandbox shooter has been in the hands of Ubisoft Montreal since 2008′s Far Cry 2, and it appears it will continue to drift away from its PC roots with Far Cry 3.

Asked if a Far Cry 3 PC beta, multiplayer or otherwise, is planned, an Ubisoft representative told me simply, “Not at this time.”

Far Cry 3 beta included with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Far Cry 3 doesn’t come out until September 4, but eager gamers can get a taste of Ubisoft’s upcoming first-person shooter a little early. The publisher today announced that it will hold a two-week-long multiplayer beta this summer, with specialty retailer GameStop giving away invites to customers who buy Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Do not trust this man. He is not a GameStop employee and will not assure you a copy of Far Cry 3 when it launches in September.

There is a catch, as customers will need to be enrolled in GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards customer loyalty program in order to receive the invite. When they purchase Ghost Recon on its May 22 launch, PowerUp members will be given a code to redeem at a GameStop website. On that site, players choose whether they want to be in the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 beta test, and they will receive the actual code via email once the beta goes live. Ubisoft will also be giving codes out through its social channels and the game’s official site.

The Far Cry 3 beta will include six playable classes, as well as multiple maps and modes. Players will be able to upgrade and customize their characters, as well as get a feel for how the game’s zip lines and combat sliding mechanics will impact multiplayer.

Far Cry 3 will cast players as Jason Brody, a man stranded on a strange tropical island similar to the setting of the first Far Cry. Gamers will head out into this “savage paradise” and “slash, sneak, and shoot” to survive in a world that has “lost all sense of morality.”

Ghost Recon Alpha is a Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Prequel Movie

If you’re super pumped for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, boy do we have a treat for you. To prep for the story of the upcoming tactical shooter, Ubisoft has put out a 24-minute prequel “movie.” The high-budget affair sets the stage for the basic story of the upcoming game. There’s a guy that some Americans need to kill because he’s evil. There’s a remote-controlled flying thingy. And there’s a whole bunch of explosions. That’s all I really got out of it. Frankly, it’s all I needed.

Ubisoft online efforts push profit turnaround

Ubisoft today posted its full-year financial results, showing off a return to profitability thanks in part to the doubling of its digital and online sales.

500,000 sold and counting.

500,000 sold and counting.

For the year ended March 31, Ubisoft reported total revenues of €1.06 billion ($1.35 billion), up from €1.04 billion ($1.32 billion) the year before. The publisher also posted a net profit of €37.3 million ($47.6 million), a turnaround from the prior year’s loss of €52 million ($66.4 million).

Ubisoft pointed to a handful of factors that drove the comeback, among them a nearly 111 percent jump in its online and digital sales. The company’s digital business includes titles like the Xbox Live Arcade hit Trials Evolution (which sold 500,000 in three weeks), as well as microtransaction-driven titles like The Settlers Online and Howrse.

In Ubisoft’s packaged goods business, an “excellent” showing from Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (which shipped 7.2 million copies, about even with Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood) and the continued success of the Just Dance series (which shipped 15 million copies cumulatively) were also singled out as sales drivers. Driver: San Francisco and Rayman Origins were also noted as “critical successes” by the publisher, with each title shipping 2 million copies worldwide.

The Wii continued to be the publisher’s biggest platform, accounting for 33 percent of Ubisoft revenues for the year. The Xbox 360 followed with 29 percent, while PlayStation 3 games contributed 22 percent of the publisher’s total sales.

Looking to the year ahead, Ubisoft expects a significant boost from its core gaming business. The publisher was particularly enthusiastic about its return to the shooter genre with Far Cry 3 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the latter of which is the most preordered Tom Clancy title to date in the US. Ubisoft is also pushing its core brands into new places, as it plans to launch a free-to-play Assassin’s Creed on iOS and Android phones at the end of the year.

“From a longer-term perspective, Ubisoft is positioning itself to capitalize on the forthcoming arrival of the next generation of consoles which will be increasingly connected and will strongly boost the market thanks to a new qualitative leap and the integration of social games benefits and the item based model, the ongoing strong growth in the free-to-play market for PCs, smartphones and tablets,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. “These major opportunities will enable us to extend our global reach, increase our average revenue per user (ARPU) and therefore raise the profitability potential of each of our brands.”

World in Conflict dev hiring for next-gen

World in Conflict developer Ubisoft Massive can now be added to the list of studios working on next-generation projects. A requisition for an online game programmer at the Malmo, Sweden-based shop seeks a staffer to work on a next-gen title.

The project is described as a “modern AAA online game,” but no further details on the title are available. As of press time, Ubisoft had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

Ubisoft Massive is presently assisting Ubisoft Montreal on development of Far Cry 3. The studio previously contributed to Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and also created the Ground Control series in addition to World in Conflict.

Ubisoft Massive joins a long list of studios working on next-generation projects, including NetherRealm Studios, Naughty Dog, Remedy Entertainment, Bethesda, and Ready at Dawn. Publisher Electronic Arts is gearing up for the next wave of consoles, too, last week revealing it will invest $80 million in future-generation development in 2012.

Avengers: Battle for Earth coming for Kinect, Wii U

The Avengers are assembling on consoles after all. Ubisoft today confirmed that it is developing The Avengers: Battle for Earth for Kinect-equipped Xbox 360s and the Wii U.

According to an Associated Press report, the game will make heavy use of those systems’ motion control capabilities. As for the story, it will feature about 20 characters from the Marvel Universe with a focus on Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. While those are the lead characters from the recently released blockbuster film The Avengers, Ubisoft’s game will actually be based on the comic series. Battle for Earth will be inspired by the Secret Invasion storyline, in which the shape-shifting alien Skrulls activate sleeper agents who have been living among humanity undetected for years.

Explaining the choice to go with motion controls for The Avengers: Battle for Earth, Ubisoft VP of sales and marketing Tony Key told the Associated Press, “This is the perfect type of game for that because these characters are very action oriented. They’re always fighting and throwing things.”

No release date has been announced for The Avengers: Battle for Earth, but Ubisoft will reveal more about the game at next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

First Assassin’s Creed 3 Gameplay Trailer

There are a couple quick scenes in the just released Assassin’s Creed 3 debut gameplay trailer that make me think Ubisoft is working on something special. One shows new protagonist Ratonhnhake:ton (or Connor if, like me, you’re stumbling for the proper pronunciation) going through a Colonial era home instead of clamoring up and over it. Another shows a massive, hilly battlefield full of soldiers firing muskets and Connor navigating his way through the mayhem. Mission accomplished, Ubisoft. I’m now itching to play Assassin’s Creed 3.

Ubisoft linked to Avengers website

Ubisoft may be looking to capitalize on the recently released Marvel film The Avengers, according to a domain name spotted by Fusible this week.

The Avengers in their first appearance, in 1963.

The site reported that the domain name “avengersbattleforearth.com” was registered on May 3, 2012 (a day before the film’s release in the United States), through the brand-protection company MarkMonitor. The domain name was registered by Marvel Characters Inc, but is currently listed on Ubisoft servers.

Speculation of a video game adaptation of Marvel’s The Avengers began with the news last September that THQ’s now-defunct studio, THQ Studio Australia, had been working on an unannounced game based on the Joss Whedon film.

Marvel later announced that it had taken back the rights to the game, based on its Avengers intellectual property, and would be “exploring potential publishing and licensing opportunities”.

As far as video game outings go, the Avengers have previously been featured in 1996′s Data East arcade fighter Avengers: Galactic Storm, as well as the 1991 arcade beat-’em-up Captain America and the Avengers, which received a number of console ports in the following years. Individually, the main characters of the Joss Whedon film–Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, and Iron Man–have all starred in their own feature films and accompanying game adaptations in recent years.

However, the only confirmed video game based on Whedon’s The Avengers is Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. The downloadable content for the Xbox 360′s Pinball FX 2 and the PS3′s Marvel Pinball features a four pack of new pinball tables and a virtual machine based on the film. It will be released this spring.
