Mario Kart 7 update kills shortcut exploits

Nintendo Europe today announced that it launched an update for Mario Kart 7 that kills off several shortcut exploits for the 3DS racing game. The update removes shortcuts Nintendo deems unfair on the Wuhu Island Loop, Wuhu Mountain Loop, and GBA Bowser Castle 1 courses.

Nintendo has removed a string of exploitable shortcuts from Mario Kart 7.

Nintendo has removed a string of exploitable shortcuts from Mario Kart 7.

Gamers who elect not to install the update will remain able to take part in Mario Kart 7′s single-player and multiplayer modes, but will not be able to play online. As of press time, Nintendo of America had not responded to GameSpot’s inquiry regarding when the update will launch in North America.

Mario Kart 7 launched for the 3DS in December 2011, scored a strong critical reception, and sold 4.54 million copies. For more, check out GameSpot’s review of Mario Kart 7.

Wasteland 2 May be Browser-Based [Update: It's Not]

Update: Fargo
clarifiesWasteland 2 will not run in a browser.

InExile head Brian Fargo has announced via Twitter that Wasteland 2 will be based on the Unity engine, saying that it “meets all the criteria we need.” What does this mean to gamers? One of the main features of Unity is that you can play it in a web browser, so Wasteland 2 may end up having that feature. Note that this doesn’t mean that Wasteland 2 will be an MMO, or even multiplayer, so don’t freak out, single-player RPG fans!

This also doesn’t mean Wasteland 2 will be what you traditionally think of as a “browser-based game.” For example, other Unity engine games, such as Battlestar Galactica Online and the upcoming MechWarrior Tactics manage to look better and be considerably more sophisticated than your typical Farmville clone.

What do you think of browser-based gaming today? Is it still a dirty word, or are you willing to give it a try?

Ghostbusters Coming to Vita (Kind Of)

Reality Fighters was far from one of our favorite PlayStation Vita launch titles — garnering just a 4.5 out of 10 in the IGN review — but the Ghostbusters are coming to Sony’s augmented reality fighter, so all is forgiven.

Nobody steps on the stairs in my town!

With today’s PlayStation Network Update, 15 free weapons will be added as DLC. May 15th will see a soccer pack, and May 22nd will bring the Ghostbusters pack. For $2.99, you’ll get two costumes (the Ghostbusters getup and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man) and three weapons (the proton pack, ghost trap, and Ecto 1). No word on international releases.

That's not creepy. At all.

Is this enough to bring you back to Reality Fighters? Let us know in the comments below.

Begin Perpetual Testing Initiative — Portal 2 Map Editor Launches Today

Update: It’s live! Check out the new Steam Workshop page here.

“Design test chambers or you’re fired.” Those are the inspiring words of Aperture’s Cave Johnson, and today, even the most hopeless of modders will be able to create Portal puzzles to make GLaDOS proud. It’s the Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative, and it brings a free map editor that makes test chamber design a snap. So hurry up and get building before Cave decides he’s got another project for you to work on. You know, something like asbestos curtain tester.

Along with the map editor, the Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC will bring Steam Workshop functionality, with user-created test chambers sorted, rated, and waiting for download in one convenient place a-la the Skyrim Workshop.

This should be fun.

Blizzard to Allow Global Play in StarCraft II

When Heart of the Swarm is released at some point in the future, Blizzard is planning on not only adding a new story campaign and multiplayer units, but additional battle.net functionality. According to an update from production director Chris Sigaty, this will include multiplayer replay viewing, unranked matchmaking, Global Play, multilanguage support, a clan system and multiplayer resume from replay.

What does that all mean? Well, with the resume from replay function, any competitive matches that suddenly get disconnected can start back up from the interrupt point instead of having to be entirely tossed out.

A Global Play system is also in the works so you can play with others outside your region, and the ability to play in online matches against others of roughly similar skill level without having to mess up your ladder ranking will also be added in.

The update also teased how an early version of Heart of the Swarm will be playable at the upcoming MLG Spring Championship from June 8 – 10.

The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb Gets Release Date

Edmund McMillen is really good at being creepy. The most recent trailer for the expansion to his already grotesque The Binding of Isaac certainly sets a tone of horrifying imagery. Fortunately, he’s also really good at giving us tons of content for not a whole lot of money. On May 28, the Wrath of the Lamb expansion will be on sale for $3.

McMillen has promised new monsters, new items, and new rooms in the giant content update. The CGI trailer shows off some terrifying spider things, tons of flies, and a few new items, none of which I’ve seen in action, but am already afraid of. If the dozens of hours I spent playing Binding of Isaac last year are any indication, though, I expect to be quite familiar with them by May 29.

Brainsss – ($0.99)

Twist! You are the zombie swarm, out to overwhelm and convert as many living humans as possible

The King of Fighters-i 2012 – ($6.99)

It’s a little disappointing that SNK’s newest KoF is an entirely new $6.99 download instead of an update to the original KoF-i, but this new edition looks so solid that it is tough to complain too much. New single player modes, online multiplayer, 12 fresh fighters and plenty more improvements have been introduced.

Robbery Bob – ($0.99)

Meet Bob, the man of “steal.” Sneak your way through 50 levels, snatching as many valuable goods as possible along the way.

Better late than never, right? Warner Bros. has finally released the iOS port of last fall’s magical Lego Harry Potter sequel.

The iPad port of this starkly beautiful indie RTS has been discounted from its standard $4.99 price for the first time since it launched in February.

App Store Update: May 2

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Luxor Evolved HD – ($4.99)

Mumbo Jumo has updated its long-running marble-shooting franchise with the same retro-neon style used in games like Pac-Man Championship.

Crazy Kangaroo – ($0.99)

Monster Shooter developer Gamelion is back with their own take on top-down platforming, ala Air Penguin.

Pandemic 2.5 – ($0.99)

Be the villain and eradicate mankind with your own custom virus in this expanded and updated version of Pandemic.

Dragons Odyssey Frane – ($11.99)

Asking $12 for this action-oriented jRPG might be a bit much, but publisher Exe-Create undoubtedly knows that many old school gamers have a weakness for the genre.

This popular arcade soccer title from Korean developer DD has gone free for the first time since it launched in February.

Venture Towns – ($1.99)

Kairosoft’s town-building strategy title is half-off! Venture Towns isn’t Kairosoft’s best effort, but it’s still extremely addictive. Read our review for the full scoop.

Grand Prix Story – ($1.99)

Kairosoft’s auto racing team sim is also half-off. It sounds like a strange premise, but Grand Prix Story is one of Kairosoft’s best and shouldn’t be missed.

Hungry Squid – (Free)

Gamers can grab this unique logic puzzler for free for a limited time. Nice!

Steam’s Remote Management Feature Isn’t Quite Ready for Prime Time

The Steam mobile app glaringly lacked a key feature: the ability to remotely manage your games library and buy, download and install games to your home computer. Valve aims to fix that with the latest Steam client update, which went into beta last night. But remote management of your Steam library isn’t a reality quite yet.

The beta launch didn’t go as smoothly as Valve would have liked, with a number of testers reporting widespread problems with the Steam beta client, notably Error Code 51 messages that prevented users from booting games. As of this posting, the remote management feature also isn’t working, resulting in a number of beta testers, myself included, searching on the Steam mobile app and online via laptops for remote download and install options for Steam games and finding none.

So yes, you will soon be able to manage your Steam library while away from home, you just can’t do it yet. I’ll update this post when the Steam beta client is running smoothly.
