Pokemon announcement January 8

The official Japanese Pokemon website has posted a teaser for an “important announcement” next Tuesday, January 8. No further information is available.

The most recent core Pokemon games were Pokemon Black and White 2, which released in North America in October 2012 behind positive critical plaudits.

Both games cracked the NPD Group’s top ten United States sales chart during their debut month, but neither charted in November (a month filled with heavyweights like Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Halo 4).

Most recently, the Pokemon Company released an official Pokedex iOS app. Similar to its in-game counterpart, the $2 Pokemon Pokedex iOS app provides a range of data, including information regarding how to evolve certain Pokemon, locations where specific creatures are found, and which types of attacks Pokemon are susceptible to.

CA senator calls NRA’s response to violent games ‘pathetic and unacceptable’

California senator Leland Yee, whose high-profile violent game law was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2011, has spoken out against the National Rifle Association’s recent response to the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

In a statement to his website, Yee said when his violent game law was brought before the Supreme Court last year, the NRA was nowhere to be seen.

“I find it mind-boggling that the NRA suddenly cares about the harmful effects of ultra-violent video games. When our law was before the Supreme Court–while several states, medical organizations, and child advocates submitted briefs in support of California’s efforts–the NRA was completely silent.”

Yee further claimed that the NRA, instead of facing the reality and becoming part of the solution to gun proliferation, is attempting to “pass the buck.”

“More guns are not the answer to protecting our children, as evident by the fact that armed guards weren’t enough to stop the tragedy at Columbine High School,” Yee said. “The NRA’s response is pathetic and completely unacceptable.”

NRA vice president Wayne LaPierre said at a press conference Friday violent video games like Bulletstorm and Mortal Kombat were partially to blame for December 14′s deadly shooting in Connecticut.

Earlier in the week, West Virginia senator Jay Rockefeller introduced a bill to Congress that would direct the National Academy of Sciences to investigate how violent games and other such programming affect children.

Disney’s Infinity project leaked

Disney’s game division has had a difficult 2012. First, there was the departure of Bungie founder Alex Seropian in February, and in November Disney Epic Mickey 2 released to critical nonchalance, compounded by the division reporting a $216 million loss. However, the company has also been heavily investing, with acquisitions of Korea-based free-to-play developer StudioEX and Indian media house UTV.

It was also recently unveiled that Disney has a new project in the works called Infinity, which GameSpot was invited to see at a Hollywood event on January 15, 2013. Now, website Polygon has seen leaked videos and images that it reports shed more light on Infinity, The game that it has seen will be a multi-platform title combining characters from Disney and Pixar’s suite of movies and television shows, and will feature an open world that can be traversed by car, on foot, or by flying.

The website reports that the game is currently being worked on by Avalanche Software, the studio that made Toy Story 3: The Video Game and Cars 2: The Video Game. The site also claims that the game will be released on platforms including consoles, the iPad and Android phones, and will feature cross-platform play. The game will be developed over time with new expansions based on specific Disney IPs, featuring characters, settings, toys and building blocks.

GameSpot has contacted Disney and will update this story if more information becomes available.

Atlus unveils God Mode

Atlus, the company behind 2011′s puzzle platforming adventure Catherine and the Persona series, has unveiled a new project titled God Mode.

The downloadable third-person shooter will be published by Atlas and developed by Old School Games.

Described as an “arcade-style four-player co-op shooter” on the game’s official website, God Mode follows a descendant of an ancient Greek god whose bloodline has been banished from Mount Olympus. To avoid an afterlife of eternal damnation, players must survive The Maze of Hades against an army of undead.

The shooter will feature RPG elements including customizable characters, upgradeable weapons, and special abilities.

“God Mode combines non-linear gameplay, fast and frantic shooting, hordes of on-screen enemies, and stunning visuals,” Atlus revealed on God Mode’s website.

“The game hosts a single-player mode, as well as online and offline (via LAN) co-op play with 1-4 players. In addition to accessing more than 11 different weapons for battle, players are also equipped with a special ability fueled by Rage, which is gathered by amassing kills. Players can choose from several different powers ranging from offensive, to defensive, to support; all of which can be upgraded.”

God Mode will be released on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 in early 2013.

THQ bankruptcy a ‘new start’ says Rubin

THQ president Jason Rubin has explained, in plain English, what the company’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing means for the future of the company and its games. Writing on the THQ website, Rubin explained that neither THQ, nor its games, are going away.

“The most important thing to understand is that Chapter 11 does not mean the end of the THQ story or the end of the titles you love,” Rubin said. “Quite the opposite is true, actually.”

Rubin explained that Chapter 11 is a “safety net” for United States companies. The executive pointed out that American Airlines is currently undergoing Chapter 11 restructuring and yet he flew on that airline recently to visit Saints Row developer Volition this month.

“MGM filed Chapter 11 two years ago, and this year it released ‘Skyfall’ and ‘The Hobbit,’ two of the biggest titles of the year. That’s what I mean when I say new start,” he said.

“Whatever happens, the teams and products look likely to end up together and in good hands. That means you can still pre-order Metro: Last Light, Company of Heroes 2, and South Park: The Stick of Truth,” Rubin added. “Our teams are still working on those titles as you read this, and all other rumored titles, like the fourth Saints Row, the Homefront sequel, and a lot more are also still in the works.”

As noted in THQ’s bankruptcy filing, private equity firm Clearlake Capital Group is interested in purchasing all of THQ’s assets. This includes staff at wholly-owned studios (Relic, THQ Montreal, Vigil, and Volition), the company’s intellectual property (titles, source code), its contracts (like those with Crytek, South Park Digital Studios, 4A Games, Obsidian, and Turtle Rock), and various support staff.

Clearlake is also providing THQ with money to continue working on its projects during the sale period and also following the sale, which is estimated to be complete in 30 days.

“In short, they are investing in a new start for our company,” Rubin said.

Though Rubin is optimistic about the future of THQ, he cautioned that nothing is set in stone until the deal goes through.

“Our Chapter 11 process allows for other bidders to make competing offers for THQ. So while we are extremely excited about the Clearlake opportunity, we won’t be able to say that the deal is done for a month or so,” Rubin said.

System of a Down frontman writing music for Morning Star

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has returned to games. The artist announced through his website that he created the entire musical score for Bungie founder Alex Seropian’s upcoming iOS title Morning Star. The game is due out in spring 2013.

“Though most of the gameplay will be action oriented cues, the stunning artwork and static scenes have inspired unique sounds unheard before,” Tankian said in a statement.

Tankian previously composed parts of the score for 2007 Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game Stranglehold, which was developed with filmmaker John Woo (Face/Off, Mission: Impossible II).

Morning Star is set 120 years into the future (around 2132) and brings players aboard the MSRV-Joplin, a research vessel equipped with heavy weaponry. Players seek out a mysterious signal, and as is often the case, disaster takes hold and gamers are thrust into the middle of an intergalactic war.

Fan creates Captain America Xbox 360 mod

As detailed on Cruse’s website, the custom Xbox 360 S model boasts a familiar blue and white color scheme, as well as Captain America’s iconic shield and the famous “A” and wings from his mask.

Cruse is a student at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has previously created a custom Iron Man Xbox 360, as well as various other gaming-focused system mods. His work is available for purchase by commission.

The Phantom Pain gets official screens

The Phantom Pain was revealed during the 2012 Video Game Awards, with many suggesting it is in fact not a new game at all, but rather an elaborate tease for a Metal Gear Solid project. The game’s first trailer depicted a character bearing a resemblance to Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series, and now developer Moby Dick Studio has released official screens of the game.

The new screenshots are pulled from the trailer and show a one-armed character waking from a coma with no recollection of who he is or what has happened to him.

The Phantom Pain’s developer, Moby Dick Studio, is also enshrouded in mystery. The Stockholm, Sweden-based developer’s website lists Joakim Mogren as its CEO. This person, however, is not a known figure. And in fact, Joakim is an acronym for Kojima.

NeoGAF has compiled a detailed list of examples as to why The Phantom Pain may be masquerading as a new Metal Gear Solid game.
